One reason why women need at least a year of maternity leave: Breastfeeding for 1 year is approximately 1800 hours. A full time job with 3 weeks vacation is 1960 hours.... I got these numbers from a meme that’s been shared tons of times (original unknown). But if you do the math, it pretty much checks out. I’d even say it underestimates the amount of time breastfeeding if you include prep, any pumping and adding on bottle feeding time, and research/courses/conversations around breastfeeding. We have pretty great maternity leave in Canada. Some places are better (go Sweden!), and many are worse (including our friends to the south). Momming is a full time job. And should he recognized as one. At least for the first year. I would argue even more. The more we support mums during these early years, the easier it will be for us to return to the workforce as our new and improved postpartum selves. What are the signs my baby is needing to drop a nap How long will it last? How can I make it easier? These are the top 3 questions I get around any nap transition. Right now, Ms. E is in the 2-1 nap transition (she’s 15 months). For her, having some 2-nap days in between some 1-nap days are what is working best right now. Her 2-nap days have a later bedtime than her 1-nap days. Later bedtime and pushing naps (or not having a nap at their usual times) are all signs... that a nap transition might be on the horizon. When Mr. D went through his 2-1 nap transition, he just kept pushing and pushing his morning nap later. Then either wouldn’t take a second nap (resulting in an early bedtime and he was often overtired) or his second nap was so late that bedtime was really late. So I decided to nudge his morning nap later and do early bedtime until we found out groove. Some families also have success capping the morning nap to keep 2 maid longer, however neither of my children seem to prefer this (although Ms. E’s morning naps are often on the shorter side anyway). All babies will navigate nap transitions differently. The key to making it go smoothly is to follow their lead and tired cues. Sometimes we need to be flexible for our children. Is it easier when everything is predictable? You bet. But that’s not reality. Especially during a transition period. As for how long it takes, my son was transitioned to 1 nap within a week. My daughter is taking at least a month. But they are both happy and healthy and getting the sleep they need. Does your baby go through nap transitions slowly or quickly? Yes! We are weird. And it’s ok to not do things the Western way (and sometimes I would argue even better to do things non-Western). ...sleeping apart from our babies is a relatively recent development and not one that extends around the globe. In other cultures sharing a room, and sometimes a bed, with your baby is the norm. This isn’t the only aspect of new parenthood that Westerners do differently. From napping on a schedule and sleep training to pushing our children around in strollers, what we might think of as standard parenting practices are often anything but.
