Naturescape Ecology News 07.11.2020

We've been sharing a lot of pictures of stumps lately. Old growth logging is continuing on Vancouver Island at a record pace, but we must also remember our impa...ct. 106 days into the direct action campaign to save Fairy Creek we have become the longest-running on-the-ground forest defense campaign in BC in over 20 years. The last time this happened the Carmanah Walbran provincial park was created and before that Clayoquot Sound saw a dramatic increase in its protections. There are always growing pains associated with any movement and it's always been a long road to saving our ancient forests. But our actions at Fairy Creek have already had an incredible impact, we have prevented the construction of over 5 km of logging roads and the clear cutting of at least three approved cut blocks. These photos are of areas that we have already saved, trees that would've been felled if we had not acted. Among them is the ninth-largest yellow cedar tree in Canada, estimated to be approximately 2000 years old. It would have been felled during road construction into the watershed had we not mobilized on August 7 to prevent the destruction of Cloud Forest. Our camps are currently under lockdown due to COVID-19, but this movement is still growing. We are still working to create new blockades and in the spring we hope to shut down logging across Vancouver Island in the biggest wave of civil disobedience since Clayoquot Sound. We must all remain strong during this shutdown and we must listen to the advice of public health experts as we continue taking action and continue creating new blockades. And as the shutdown continues we must use this time to prepare to once and for all end ALL old growth logging.
