So just finished and delivered a couple more custom orders, with a Maple Island Counter Top (this maple wood was destined for fire wood until I did a tree rescue on it ) and then two Red Cedar Burl Side Tables

Studies have found that the presence of wood elements reconnects you with nature, reduces stress and supports creative thinking I totally agree with that statement!!

I have been taking a little time away from the shop to mill a really nice Maple tree that I found washed up on the beach not far from our house, and today while I was milling the fellow who owns the property came along and gave me permission to use his road along the beach and I was able to drive to within 25 feet of where the tree was. I had already gotten a nice truck load of slabs yesterday and went back finished it up today, I am using a Husky 656 71 cc saw with a small log mill from Granburq (American made!! 2 thumbs up!! ) with a 20 inch bar and ripping chain for milling and a 30 inch bar with skip tooth chain for bucking, a great set up for milling smaller logs, I highly recommend Granburq's Alaskan Mills , much better quality than the knock off's and the ripping chain leaves such a smooth finish.

Our neighbor recently had a Silver Maple tree taken down in her yard and she was nice to let me mill the base of the tree into slabs for tables, it looks like really nice wood, and I am cutting some nice slabs up to 21 inches wide. , But the really interesting part of the story is the metal rod that was found in the tree when the guys were taking it down, it was hard on the chain on the saw and then they had to give it a hard pull with the truck to get the tree over, The metal rod must have been but there years ago to keep the tree up right.

One of my latest projects, and one of my favorite projects!! In the Style of Japanese Shou Sugi Ban (burning wood ) I have been salvaging stumps and roots from where wildfires burnt through logging slashes on the North Island, So instead of a person intentionally burning the wood , nature has done it for me, and created some absolutely amazing pieces, I just wire brushed off the loose charcoal. These are the first two pieces I have finished , a Red Cedar side table and Yellow Cedar Side Table, and a couple pictures of where it came from , Very Cool!!

Super, super happy and excited, the big Yew tree that I salvaged this summer near Zeballos has finally been milled into slabs, it is probably one of the rarest tree's in B.C As yew tree's are very slow growing, this is a giant and must have been over 1000 years old. It is absolutely amazing wood, so much character , the widest slabs are 25 inches across, and the butt of the tree was 32 inches across Wow! what a find!! Looking forward to making some dining room tables with some of these slabs.

Cutting some Red Cedar slices for table tops on the beach this morning, really nice wood should make some really nice coffee tables and side tables,, now if I can only get the dog to help pack them back to the truck that would be good, that 565 Husky does not even break a sweat cutting that red cedar, great saw!!

I delivered the dining room table I have been working on today, The top is made from salvaged fir boards from an old School in Victoria and the legs I salvaged from some old bridge timbers near Zeballos, it is a great match for the house, some very happy customers. now I can start on the matching bench.
