This year, the 4th anniversary of my father’s passing, the deep low I feel is due to the lower starting point. It’s similar to the boiling point of anger. I lose my cool so much easier these days too. But with sadness, it pushes you to the point of feeling the raw heartbreak as though it’s just happened. Many of us are living with such consistently heightened levels that our normal coping measures are not working. I ask that we understand this when we look into the eyes of e...ach masked passerby. And realize that social media outrage is one of the ways we are trying to cope... but expressing outrage usually serves to heighten those feelings rather than suppress them. I know, I’ve tried. Protect yourself. Be kind to yourself. Be understanding to others. I’m supporting the Canadian Cancer Society’s Dry February campaign this year for a few reasons... First, the society’s fundraising efforts are diminished due to Covid and the need is just as great: Perhaps will be increased with the various increases in health issues due to the pandemic. As I can attest, many of us have increased our alcohol intake over this past year, and that alone could very well lead to an increase in cancer rates. I’m hoping to draw attention to this so... more of us check our own intake. I have a daughter who is almost the age I was when my own mother died of cancer. I should be doing everything possible to avoid her having to live through that same pain. This is one of the things I can and will control, as I vow to decrease my intake for good. I’ve both lost people close to me, and have watched others fight this disease and come out the other side due to treatment, but they live with the experience in their minds and bodies everyday. Let’s not forget that almost half of the population will have some form of cancer in their lifetimes. Let’s work to save as many of that half as possible.
