Set out your shoes and clean your socks, ‘cause LA BEFANA is coming to town tonight! Tomorrow, January 6th, is La Festa dell’ #Epifania, or the Feast of the #E...piphany- which means #Italian children everywhere are expecting an overnight visit from #LaBefana! Befana flys her broom all over #Italy on the eve of the Epiphany, filling children’s socks or shoes with presents and candy if they’ve been good all year, or a lump of coal (a special confection made to look like real coal) if they were bad. We’re told that days before the First Christmas, #Befana was approached by the #ThreeWiseMen (or the #ThreeKings) a few days before the birth of Jesus, seeking directions to where He was, as they had seen his star in the sky, but she did not know where it lead. The magi invited her to join them on their journey to find the baby Jesus, but she declined because she had too much housework to do (now that’s an Italian #Nonna). But once they had left, La Befana had a change of heart, so she went looking for the Three Kings. Unfortunately despite her best efforts she never found them, but Befana is still searching after all these centuries for the new born messiah. On the eve of the Epiphany, Befana comes to every house where there is a child and leaves a gift. Although she has been unsuccessful in her search, she still leaves gifts for good young children because the Christ Child can be found in all children.
