Many of the principles of naturopathic medicine date back 2,400 years. Hippocrates, the father of natural medicine, believed in the body’s natural healing power. He trusted in the healing properties of rest, a good diet, fresh air, and cleanliness. Today, naturopathic medicine blends scientific knowledge with traditional and natural medicine.

All disease begins in the gut, Hippocrates. Digestive health is one of the most common complaints naturopathic doctors run in to. Often, while investigating any underlying causes, ND’s will be led to the condition of your gastrointestinal tract. Getting enough sleep, proper exercise, and incorporating pro and prebiotics into your diet, are all things that help with proper gut health. For more information, call your local ND’s office and set up a consultation.

Quality sleep is essential for whole person health. Being sleep deprived may increase the risk of chronic disease, impact your metabolism, and wreak havoc on your cognitive functions. A naturopathic doctor can assess the whole person for underlying causes of sleep disruption, with a focus on nutrition, environment, emotional/psychological, hormonal, and medication-related side effects. Visit your local ND and start getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep your body needs tonight!

From our member Dr. Mollie Brennan ND; Soy is confusing for most people. Is it good for hormones? Bad for thyroid? Better in milk form? And what the heck is natto bean anyway. (Hint: slimy goop) A study from 2019 found no effect of soy intake on free T3 or free T4. A 10% increase in TSH, usually from people consuming soy protein powder every day.... As with everything, the medicine is in the dose. Maybe choose another protein powder, but don’t worry about that soy latte. I hope that clears up the myth Book with me to help you navigate your thyroid healing. Even the healthiest eaters may need to augment their diet with essential vitamins and supplements; but, for many, the sheer number of choices in the vitamin aisle can be distressing. Vitamin C and D and a multi are a good place to start; however, iron, calcium, and fish oil are fairly typical in an essential vitamin routine. Your local Naturopathic Doctor can do a virtual consultation, and set up a vitamin plan that works best for you

Stress can be a major root cause to a lot of illness; and the holiday season may bring additional stressors into our lives. Here’s a tip for when you feel stressed out, overwhelmed, or out of control breathe deeply and take a break. When all of the tasks at hand seem to carry the same weight and gravity, stepping back to get some perspective is a healthy and supportive way to manage stress. Figure out what you can let go of, and what needs to get done. Find someone or some people to support you in knocking off your stressful endeavours. Take time for social connection, get plenty of sleep and don’t forget to breathe! Deep breathing and paying attention to your breath is a great way to lower stress and balance the body.

One principle of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person. Naturopathic doctors recognize that the whole body and the environment we live in are interrelated. Furthermore, it recognizes that each person is unique and requires individualized care. In treating the cause of any condition, your Naturopathic Doctor takes into account not only your physical symptoms, but many other factors. Disease affects the entire person, not just a specific organ or system. Your nutritional status, lifestyle, family history, feelings, environmental stresses, and physical health are all carefully evaluated and addressed.
