29 October 2020 NB-NDP Women’s Forum Thanks New Brunswick’s Chief Medical Officer The NB-NDP Women's Forum held its inaugural meeting virtually on Tuesday October 27th 2020.... Our members would like to publicly acknowledge the exceptional work of New Brunswick’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell. She has communicated exceptionally well how by following increased restrictions, New Brunswickers can work together to beat the current Covid-19 outbreak. With the co-operation of New Brunswickers, Dr Russell is making New Brunswick a leader in prevention of community viral spread. Her leadership has been in the same league as BC's Chief Medical Officer, and fellow Maritimer, Dr. Bonnie Henry. At the founding meeting, Juliana McIntosh, Co-chair of the NB-NDP Women’s Forum said: Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic we have seen increasing unemployment disproportionately impact women in our communities, and a lack of adequate child care services have prevented many women from returning to work even when given the opportunity. Now more than ever we need strong policy by and for women in New Brunswick so that we can build a better future for all in our province. Co-chair Evelyne Godfrey added: We need to work together to build our lives back better from this global pandemic. Whether you’re in a Trade Union, or you’re struggling for work, or if you’re part of a housing or trading co-operative - like NB Power: that’s a co-op we all do business with - or you’re a member of a Credit Union/caisse populaire, or you support a community group that advocates for women, you have the opportunity to make your voice heard in the NB-NDP. Patti Chmelyk, the Women’s Forum Secretary, said: We are reaching out not only to NDP members, but to all NB women who have an interest or expertise in advocacy and policy development in women's social and governance issues: particularly social determinants of health, pay equity, workplace safety, child care, environmental health, and food security - because women's issues are everyone's issues." What makes the NDP’s politics different? You do. The NB-NDP Woman’s Forum invites all our NB women members and supporters to join us in developing policies that will benefit every New Brunswicker. The upcoming NB-NDP Women’s Forum meeting will be held virtually on Sunday November 22nd.
