NCABL 11.11.2020

Keller Field in Westlock Alberta was beautifully groomed and the park glistened with its new outfield fence and recently painted grandstand. The second game in Series A of the LCSFS was largely viewed as a mismatch of epic proportions following the manhandling received by the Red Lions at the hands of a very determined and hungry Athletics team. Grit and pride have always defined the Red Lions throughout their storied existence in the NCABL and today was evidence of that as C...armen Brown held the powerful Athletic bats at bay for five innings as the Red Lions hung on to a 2 - 1 lead. As Brown tired, the Athletic bats began to find holes in the Red Lion infield and outfield. Without two of the three Watamaniuk brothers who had left to pursue their college careers, the Red Lions were more vulnerable and their defence, despite a few crisp double plays, somewhat more challenged. After the Athletics exploded for five runs in the sixth, the Red Lions could do little more than attempt a last gap comeback scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Cody McElroy put out the fire by registering the final out of the game. The pennant champion Sherwood Park Athletics defeated the Westlock Red Lions 7 -4 to sweep the series. The Athletics will be hosting the League Championship Final Series away from their usual home base at Centennial Park. The LCFS will be held in St. Albert at Legion Field on Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th. The Athletics await the results of a winner in the Blackhawks vs. Primeaus series which concludes on Tuesday at Remax Field in Edmonton. Two games are scheduled for Saturday, August 24, the first at 1:00 PM and the second at 4:00 PM. A third game in the LCFS would be played on Sunday at 2:00 PM See more

Two games were played at Keller Field on Saturday, August 17th. The first game was a scheduled exhibition game featuring the Casland Chiefs and the Westlock Grey Lions. The Chiefs won that contest 6 -2 over the Grey Lions with Mark Trela credited with the win for Casland. That game was followed by game one in the best of three A Series of the League Championship Semi-Final between the pennant Champion Sherwood Park Athletics and the fourth place Westlock Red Lions. The Athlet...ics exploded with 24 hits to score 21 runs on their way to a rout of the Red Lions. The Red Lions could only muster 3 runs on 5 hits. Each club struggled defensively as Sherwood Park was charged with 3 errors and the Red Lions with 4 errors. Kevin Dryburgh earned the victory for the Athletics . The Series continues on Sunday with game 2 scheduled for 1:00 PM and a possible game #3 starting at 4:00 PM The first of two on-field award ceremonies was held at 3:45 PM, also at keller Field. The Servus Cup, emblematic of regular season domination, was presented to the Sherwood Park Athletics. The Manager of the Year Award was presented to Craig Fagnan of the Edmonton Primeaus. Location: John Fry Park, Edmonton Game #2 of a best of three series Game time: 1:29 Final Score: Edmonton Primeaus 2 Edmonton Blackhawks 1... Kyle Fagnan of the Edmonton Primeaus came out firing against the Blackhawks tonight to record the win and tie the series at one game apiece. Fagnan allowed only four hits in his complete game outing, while Josh Turner also allowed only four hits in a losing cause for the Blackhawks. The Primeaus once again opened the scoring on hits by Craig Fagnan, Kyle Fagnan, and Matt Rude who earned an RBI and the only earned run of the game. The second Primeau run was unearned as was the only Blackhawk run in a later inning which was scored by Ewanishan on a sacrifice fly. Fans witnessed a number of good plays by both clubs, but a spectacular outfield catch in the late innings by Mott of the Primeaus denied the Blackhawks a comeback that might have been. A solid performance by both clubs who will be back to do battle on the diamond next Tuesday, August 20th. The site for the game which will be hosted by the Blackhawks has not yet been announced. The St. Albert Cardinals were hoping to break the jinx cast upon them by the Westlock Red Lions who have on two previous occasions broken a tie for the final post-season berth by defeating the Cardinals in either a post-season tie breaker or in a head to head late season game. The stage was set for a three peat of the same bad medicine for the Cardinals. And following a 9 - 1 dust up in favour of the Red Lions at Legion Field tonight, the jinx continues to hover over the hapl...ess Cardinals. The Red Lions were determined to return to the post season and any rival, including the pennant winning Sherwood Park Athletics, should not take them lightly. Series A of the League Championship Semi-Final Series will see the fourth place Red Lions pitted against the Athletics from Sherwood Park in what will most certainly be a hotly contested series. The first game of that series is slated for Keller Field on Saturday, August 17th. First pitch is at 4:00 PM The second and third game will be played on Sunday, August 18. Game times are 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM respectively. In the meantime, Series B of the LCSFS began at Remax Field tonight. The Primeaus scored their lone run of the baseball game in the top of the first, but that lead was quickly extinguished when the Blackhawks tallied in their half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead . The Blackhawks never looked back as they played solid defensive baseball behind the sure pithing of Kyle Lawrence. Although the Primeaus managed to record several hits off of the Blackhawk starter, they were scattered throughout the game. Defensive woes plagued the Primeaus throughout the game as they continuously missed their targets on thrown balls. The Primeaus did record a crisp double play to home and back to first which was a highlight play. The Blackhawks dominated tonight’s contest at home.
