One important piece of information for foresters is to determine how much volume (in cubic meters) a stand of trees contains. Using math skills MMPS students could determine the volume of a cone, but needed to know the height. Without climbing a tree how did they do it? Using a clinometer, a tool designed for the job, they found it easy! http://nedaak.ca

How do you tell how old a tree is? Marjorie Mills Public School outdoor students learned that there are various ways to find out the last wildfire, the harvest history or, more fun, count the rings. Each year a tree grows a ‘ring’ and depending on how well it grew, the ring is wider or narrower. But, without cutting down the tree how do you count the rings? The students used an increment bore to drill into the tree and extract a core sample. They learned a tree isn’t as old as they think! http://nedaak.ca/

Nedaak’s Chief Forester hosted two groups of @Marjorie Mills Public School students overnight on her trap line in early November to share knowledge about trapping, biodiversity, forest management, field measurement techniques and basic outdoor survival skills. It was cold, but fun, and s’mores were had by all! #forestmanagement #outdoorschool #trapping #outdooreducation #forestry #nedaak

Forest Compliance is an important aspect of Sustainable Forest Management. Nedaak performs forest compliance inspections in all areas of forest management. The bulk of our inspections are performed on harvest operations, followed by roads, water-crossings and silvicultural activities. Forest compliance inspections are a regulatory requirement and are intended to ensure contractual and regulatory requirements are met in forest operations. Nedaak assists forest harvesters with ...inspections on their operations and also conducts regular audits of forest compliance activities on the forest. With these inspections, our Compliance Inspectors inspect active operations and make note of both good practices as well as any issues that they observe, for example wasteful practices or poor wood utilization. The aim of the compliance program is to continuously improve and use best practices to meet forest compliance objectives. Nedaak actively works with harvesters and other operations to improve their awareness, understanding and performance. Formal inspection reports are completed and entered into the Forest Operations Information Program (FOIP). Nedaak currently has 2 certified compliance inspectors with a combined 40+ years of experience. If you need help with forest compliance inspections, we can be reached at [email protected] or at 807-876-9696.

At 1,977,684 hectares, the Kenogami Forest is the second largest area of forest resources in Ontario, and surrounds the towns of Nakina, Geraldton, Longlac, Schreiber and Terrace Bay. Ne-Daa-Kii-Me-Naan Inc. (Nedaak) was established in 2012 to manage the Kenogami Forest and to provide economic development opportunities for surrounding First Nations and local communities. Since that time, Nedaak has been successful in planning and supporting operations, and in regenerating the forest. Nedaak operates in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Our company is committed to Sustainable Forest Management and in local workforce training and capacity building.

A geographic information system (GIS) lets us visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns and trends occurring on the Kenogami Forest. GIS is essential to understanding what is happening and what will happen in a given geographical space. The collected data allows Foresters to prescribe action to ensure a healthy, productive forest is maintained.
