Neighbours Against Victoria Truth Centre Rezoning 06.12.2020

Please join us in celebrating the magnificent TREES about to be sacrificed for an 83 unit luxury development at the nearly 2-acre former Truth Centre site. Did you know that the 2 giant, 150 year old sequioas were planted during the gold rush? They are among 10 by-law protected mature trees to be felled for a total of 29. It’s ironic that this is happening as our Mayor (who voted in favour of the development proposal) is calling for the CRD Board Chair to ask local governments to declare climate emergencies. The City of Victoria has largely failed to implement the 26 recommendations in the Urban Forest Master Plan and is not even replacing one-for-one the trees being lost.

We are sad to report that Council voted in support of the applicant’s development proposal. Mayor Helps, Councillors Thornton-Joe, Alto, Coleman, Lucas and Loveday voted to support the proposal while councillors Madoff, Young and Isitt opposed it.

The Public Hearing on April 12, 2018 was interrupted when a gentleman became ill and an ambulance was called. Given the timing, the meeting was postponed and will resume on April 26 at 6:30 PM. We are able to continue our speaking order and new speakers will will be added to the list. Letters will be accepted until Noon on April 26.
