Nelsons Emergency Services Join MADD Canada in the launch of the Red Ribbon Campaign: Nelson Police Chief Constable Paul Burkart, Nelson Fire and Rescue Chief Len MacCharles, Nelson Emergency Health Services Chief Deb Morris and the Integrated Impaired Driving Unit join our Nelson MADD Canada representative, Pat Henman to remind the public to find a safe ride home after consuming drugs or alcohol over the holidays. MADD Canada’s Red Ribbon Campaign consists of red ribbons an...d red ribbon car decals being distributed during the month of December to sober drivers. The red ribbons symbolize a person’s commitment to driving sober and serve as a tribute to those who were killed or hurt in impaired driving crashes, according to the organization. While the usual parties and celebrations may be limited this year due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the holiday season is still a busy time on our roads and still a time of high risk for impaired driving, the group said in a release. Impaired driving crashes are 100% preventable, said MADD Nelson Community Leader Pat Henman. The campaign runs from now until January 4, 2021

2020 REMEMBRANCE DAY IN NELSON - LIVE STREAMED EVENT The public is invited to celebrate the Remembrance Day 2020 ceremony with family and friends in the comfort... and safety of their own homes via broadcast on Facebook Live. The event will be live-streamed on the Royal Canadian Legion No 51 Nelson BC's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/365851643795006/permalink/1232111240502371/ This year's ceremony is scaled back due to current health regulations that restrict the size of public gatherings to fifty people. There will be NO marching this year and only Legion members and veterans will be participating in the ceremony at the cenotaph in front of City Hall. The Legion asks that the public stay home and watch the event via live-stream. Wreaths will be pre-laid around the cenotaph. There will be a small contingent of people from both the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band and Nelson City Band also in attendance. Besides the above, the format will remain. The Legion Branch 51 would like to thank all of you for your continued support. Even in these hard times, the response to this year’s poppy campaign has been exceptional. Wear your poppy proudly and please stay safe. #nelsontogether #NelsonRemembranceDay2020

DON'T TAKE THE BAIT! October 23, 2020 Nelson Hydro / BC Hydro Scam concerning disconnect notification for non-payment. ... Nelson Hydro is concerned as another scam has resurfaced among electrical utilities, including BC Hydro, which may soon target Nelson Hydro customers. According to BC Hydro, a fraudster sends out an automated call from a 604 area code number threatening service disconnection due to an overdue bill. The customer is asked to call a 1-877 number, which connects to a spoofed BC Hydro number (which looks legitimate). Someone posing as a BC Hydro employee then asks the victim to purchase pre-paid credit cards, deposit money into a bitcoin ATM wallet or other means. Nelson Hydro customers should be aware of the following: Nelson Hydro will not call a customer and tell them they are two blocks away and are coming to disconnect your service. All disconnections for non-payment have been suspended for the winter. Nelson Hydro does not request customers to submit banking or credit card information via email or text message. Nelson Hydro does not accept payment via pre-paid cash cards or prepaid credit cards, or bitcoin ATM. Nelson Hydro does not offer refunds or credits through Interac e-transfer. Customers are asked to call 1-877-32HYDRO (1-877-3249376) or 250-352-8206 if they have questions about the authenticity of an email, text, or phone call. Our customers are encouraged to report suspected fraud to the Nelson City Police. They can be reached at (250) 354-3919.

Nelson Police Board Announces Chief Constable Paul Burkart’s Retirement August 12, 2020 The Nelson Police Board announced today Chief Constable Paul Burkart pro...vided his notice of retirement, effective spring of 2021. Burkart was appointed as Chief Constable of the Nelson Police Department on February 1, 2016, after previously serving for three years as Inspector and Deputy Chief. He has served with distinction with both the Nelson and Calgary Police services for over 25 years. Chief Burkart has brought a number of initiatives to Nelson that have made our community and our policing better, including working closely with our vulnerable population and local non-profit agencies. He has also played a vital role in the development of the Fentanyl Task Force and the Peer-to-Peer Mental Health program that provides mental health support to first responders. Chief Burkart served on several community service agency boards and taught the D.A.R.E. program in Nelson schools for over ten years. He also volunteered a great deal of time with the Nelson Youth Soccer Board and acted as a soccer coach for 12 years. Chief Burkart has worked hard to mentor and develop his team at the Nelson Police Department, and I know his legacy will continue to have a positive impact on our community for many years to come, says Mayor John Dooley, Chair of the Nelson Police Board. While we are sorry to see him leave, we are very happy for him and wish him all the best in his retirement.
