Open your heart with yoga is a short YouTube video to help you stretch the often short muscles in the front of your upper chest. When space is created in the front of the body the rib cage is able to move more freely, the lungs expand to a fuller capacity increasing the sensation of calm and ease. New 30 min live stream class!! Why 30 mins? Because it's doable. Because it is effective. Because you are less likely to talk yourself out of it.... Because you will experience success. Because you will want to do it again. Making a commitment to shorter practices and doing them frequently is infinitely more beneficial to your whole self than setting heroic intentions. Starting Wednesday, January 13th at 8 am join me for a 30 minute Rise & Shine Hatha Flow practice at the Nest yoga online. $15 per class or $55 per month for 3 live stream classes per week plus an on-demand library of over 180 video/audio yoga and meditation practices. Do you feel pressure to make changes and set (probably unrealistic) intentions for yourself at this time of year? I know I do. I don't even believe in New Year's resolutions and I feel the pressure! For me, January is still a time of rest and settling. Our culture is all about moving forward, growth and what's next. I like to challenge this by taking it extra slow at this time of year. What is there left to say about this year? Not much on my part. I am going to spend the rest of it cozied in front of the fire with Leo (and maybe @alsgourmetfalafel if he can sit still! ), eating good food, reading fiction, going for long walks and talking on the phone with friends and family. After an unprecedented amount of time spent on a computer this year, I am taking the rest of the year off. The Nest yoga online video and audio library is available and packed with y...oga practices and guided meditations. I look forward to meeting on the mat in the new year. Has your favourite Yoga teacher stopped teaching because of the pandemic? Maybe your local Yoga studio has been forced to close? You still want to practice so what do you do? Now is the perfect time to dive into a home practice. The group studio classes that we are all used to is a relatively new approach to Yoga. In the past, each student would have met with their teacher, been offered guidance on what to practice and then practiced mostly on their own. You are part of an em...erging group of students who are returning to this independent and personalized approach to Yoga. There are many resources available on what to practice but the missing piece seems to be sustaining a consistent practice. I share all my best tools and tips for sustaining a consistent practice in my free guide. Each month at the Nest online, we have a themed community get together (online, of course) where we chat, share, and ask questions. This month's get together is on December 22nd at 6.30 pm and the theme is self-care for the holidays. With this holiday season being different than seasons past, my suggestions for mindful self-care are also different.... If you are a member of the Nest yoga online, join me for an hour next Tuesday. We'll practice grounding meditation, I'll share some of my ideas for holiday self-care and then there will be an opportunity to ask questions and share your ideas. Hello! I’m Sarah Jane. I help creative, independent women with full lives envision and maintain an inspiring home yoga practice. A practice that supports their physical, mental, and emotional well-being so that they can show up fully for themselves and others. I have been an avid yoga student for fifteen years and a teacher for the past ten. Living on a small island, with limited access to group yoga classes, was my initial incentive for diving into a home practice. It was ...a lot of trial and error at first but once I found my groove the rewards for getting on the mat (even when I didn't feel like it), continued to show up as increased self-confidence, a deeper trust in my intuition and the freedom to be who I am. Some days the resistance was (is) overwhelming but, when I permit myself to adapt my practice based on how I am feeling, the rewards surpass the initial resistance. Do you feel that resistance? Want some of help working with that? Grab my free guide to home practice featuring best tips and tools to get you on the mat and keep you coming back. With the latest round of restrictions and closures of yoga, fitness and dance studios, it is more crucial than ever to support local teachers. How do you this? Buy their digital offering! If you have received value from attending in-person classes and events and hope to do so again in the future, attend their online classes.... Is it different? Yes! Is it ideal? Maybe yes, maybe no. Is it necessary to ensure that you can attend again in person in the future? YES. Sure, there are flashy, low-priced offers out there that allow you to take classes with famous teachers, so why would you pay more money for something that doesn't look as good or has fewer bells and whistles? One word: Community. Do you value having yoga/ dance/ fitness teachers in your community? Do you value the relationship and connection you have with them? Are you longing for the day that you can go back to the studio and take classes with them? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, you need to attend their online classes and buy their digital offerings. If you don't, they will likely not be in business very much longer. We must let the power and care that comes with being part of a supportive community be a guiding factor in where we spend our money. Support local! Tag your local yoga/fitness/dance teacher that is offering online experiences and tell us how you value them as a member of your #community . #communityovercompetition #communitysupport #yogateachers #yogateacheronline #onlineyogaclasses #onlinedanceclass #onlinefitnesstrainer #shoplocal #saltspringisland #saltspringyogateacher #thenestyoga #thenestyogaonline #practicewithsj

Have you heard of the term the 'messy middle' or 'Day 2'? These terms refer to the uncomfortable, difficult time you encounter when you are learning or experiencing something new. You know the excitement, possibility and enthusiasm you have when you enter a new relationship, start a new hobby, learn a new yoga pose or embark on a big project? This stage is the 'Honeymoon phase.' Well, Day 2, or the messy middle, is when you start to come up against your edges in that new rel...ationship, hobby or Yoga pose. When the shine has worn off, and you realize there is more work to be done than you initially thought or when the self-doubting thoughts start to creep in. There is no way to avoid Day 2. Sometimes the difficulty that we experience here stops us in our tracks, and we might be tempted to opt-out for a little while or altogether. Breaking new ground in any area of our lives requires us to gather resources and wade through the messy middle. Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She coined the phrase 'Day 2'. She hosts one of my favourite podcasts, Unlocking Us, and in an episode from a couple of months ago, unpacks the details of the term and relates it to the current pandemic situation. Check it out. https://brenebrown.com/podcast/brene-on-day-2/ My Yoga practice continues to be the place that I process all my 'Day 2' frustration and anxiety. Having a familiar place to return to (my mat), a practice that moves energy ( asana or Yoga postures), and a framework to practice being comfortable with the uncomfortable (meditation) is invaluable in my life. I hope that your practice provides you with the same. If you would like support in developing a practice that, in turn, supports you, then consider working one on one with me. I have a few openings in my schedule starting in December.

The Sanskrit word 'Abhyasa' literally means 'to apply oneself' and is often referred to as discipline. When working from this framework, the act of discipline relates to our intention and commitment and our practice becomes discipline in action. This might sound rigid and boring but true discipline - tapas - requires creativity, inspiration and exploration. So, where to start? Build a solid foundation. I used to think that Yoga practice was a nice add on to life, like a treat. I now think, and feel, it is imperative to staying sane! Everything we experience needs to be processed and moved through us otherwise it builds up, starts pouring out in ways we don't quite understand. Yin Yoga is a container for sifting through that which is held in the body. The time spent in the postures, without forcing, connects us to an innate state of allowing that we have become distanced from. Our culture rewards pushing, striving, overcoming and dominating. There needs to be a balance and Yin yoga is one way to steer towards that balance. There are 3 places left in the November 11th Rest & Recharge: Two Hour Yin Yoga Practice session. This Hatha Yoga for contentment practice includes seated and standing postures. Practicing yoga poses with blocks and straps reduces strain and allows a sense of ease in the poses. How do you take the practice of Yoga beyond the physical poses? You practice with an intention in mind. Thank you for nominating me for three Salty Awards hosted by the Salt Spring Island Chamber of Commerce! Resilient Woman in Business Innovation Award of Excellence Customer Service Award... Hello, I'm Sarah Jane, and I run the Nest hot yoga and the Nest yoga online. Since 2014, I have been happily teaching Yoga classes to grateful students from our home-based studio on Cudmore Road. In March, when forced to close due to......well, you know why!... I decided to keep Yoga classes available to students by taking the studio online. This was, and continues to be, a lot of work! I have had a trial by fire education in filming, audio recording, video editing, video lighting, teaching online, video hosting platforms, and launching an online business. Before March, I hadn't done any of these things, and I taught myself through research, trial and error. I am proud of the Nest yoga online and the resource it has become. Each week, there are three opportunities to connect during the interactive live- stream classes, which always start with a check-in. These conversations are as valuable as the movement/meditation practice itself as they help keep students connected with me and each other, therefore keep the community intact. There are also over 150 on-demand video and audio yoga and meditation practices at the Nest yoga online. This format allows students the freedom to practice whenever it suits their schedule, choose a class that fits their timeframe or select a theme based on how they are feeling. Yoga studios are now allowed to be open, but the Nest remains closed due to its intimate nature. Given the necessary physical distancing requirements, I could run classes at only 1/3 of capacity, and that is simply not financially viable. In light of this, the brick and mortar location remains closed, but the virtual studio is open and welcoming new students. Pivoting to a virtual studio has been an immense amount of learning, energy and financial investment. I am very grateful for the adjustment students have made in order to take classes online. This flexibility supports me and my business. I acknowledge that it might not be the preferred format, but these students are investing in themselves while keeping the business (somewhat) afloat. Yoga practice is a stable place that we can turn to in times of great uncertainty, and I am dedicated to supporting students in their practice. Thank you for considering me and my business as the recipient of an award. Sarah Jane

The unexpected truth of commitment - To the casual glance, it might look boring, like something is taking too long like you’re missing out or unwilling to adventure and change. But to the discerning eye, endurance is the great friend of passion. It is slow to burn, but lasting in warmth. It sees beyond the temporary trends and swells into the unchanging depth of things. If you’ve ever stood next to a person who won’t be moved, then you know what freedom taking a stand can i...nspire. There, in the anchoring itself, is the invitation to soar. - Toko-pa Turner After having a steady commitment to my home practice, I feel the effects that Toko-pa speaks of in her delightful way. Living on an island, it can seem that there are limited opportunities to discover somewhere new. I had the pleasure of going to a new to me magical beach recently and see views of the sea and land that I hadn’t witnessed before. It got me thinking about Yoga (all roads lead there eventually in my mind). When practice becomes a bit stale, it is tempting to think we have done all there is. Done all the poses, learned all the techniques, figured it out but there is always a dif...ferent perspective to explore. I am diving deep into an exploration of perfectionism within myself that has been newly uncovered. What perspective are you approaching practice with these days? Fresh or weathered - I’d love to hear. #mythofperfection #homeyogapractice #shiftperspective #giftsofimperfection #saltspringisland #saltspringyoga #saltspringyogateacher #practicewithpurpose #practicewithsj #yogaoffthemat #thenestyoga #thenestyogaonline

I've been an avid Yoga student for the past fifteen years and a teacher for the past ten. Living on a small island, with limited access to group Yoga classes, was my initial incentive for diving into a home practice. The... rewards for getting on the mat day after day (even when I don't feel like it), continue to show up as increased self-confidence, a deeper trust in my intuition and the freedom to be who I am. What could happen in your life if you made a commitment to home Yoga practice? Want to get on the mat but need some help? Although I have trained in the art of stillness and quiet, it can be uncomfortable. There is a pull to move forwards, to put the next thing in motion. It takes courage, the gritty kind, to allow an unfolding of life, to sit in the not knowing. #seasonalpractices #mindfulnessmeditation #myceliummagic #thenestonline #thenestyoga #practicewithsj #saltspringyoga #saltspringyogateacher #saltspringisland

Warm-up with a few Sun Salutations and Warrior II before practicing Half Bound Lotus Forward Bend. Have a strap handy as I use one in the video. This seated pose helps to lengthen the back of the body, increase hip and shoulder mobility. Move slowly into and out of these bound poses, stay with your breath and be mindful of the signals your body is giving you. If you feel pinching or strain, this is your body telling you to ease off.
