SEE THE EARLY RED FLAGS! Inspired today by a poor performance from a local contractor! So often we here from clients about their anxiety for bad business. It's everywhere! That's why people choose to use social media to ask friends for a reference. People infinitely choose to work with those they know, like, and trust!... Friends, let's review 3 red flags that indicate your contractor is there for money not your interests! 1-No personal chat first. In "Shoe dog" by Phil Knight (Nike story), Phil goes to Japan to initiate business. In Japan, it is considered very American to try to do business BEFORE tea and courtesy, DISRESPECTFUL. It should be paramount for all businesses to display this show of human compassion. If not, they aren't who you are looking for. 2-They don't smile. This one is simple. Any person with the right attitude smiles when they meet you! Even a person without a natural inclination to smile naturally, if they are intentional business gurus, they have read Dale Carnegie's "How to win friends and influence people"! This is one of the most popular entrepreneur starter books since the 1950's. If you want to attract new friends, smile like a Labrador dog eagerly anticipating a belly rub! . If they don't attract you, they are not the kind of entrepreneurs you want to attract, period! 3-Mid conversation with you, they answer their incoming phone call, WITHOUT attempting to screen! We all take phone calls all the time, if your contractor can't focus on the current priority, YOU, it means A-they don't respect your time. B-they do not have the capacity of schedule and organization to prioritize tasks. EXCEPTION: "Terribly sorry Jill, this is a call I must take." They answer the phone and they make it QUICK. You are the priority! Folks, there are many more red flags, but these are the early recognition points of bad business to come. In EVERY case, your service/sales vendor should ALWAYS make you feel SPECIAL. True business serves, greed is loud and translucent. If you need a contractor vetted, by all means we can help. All businesses should be viewed like a public business. We must gauge more than just profitability. We must review the social responsibility aspects as well. When committing to a vendor, please ask yourself: "Is this a company I want to see succeed?" When you buy, you invest, and YOU become a stakeholder. You are invested, because you live with the product, and you share the results good or bad. It can make you excited and even emotional, good or bad, you are a stakeholder. Well we are back in the Okanagan, and while I love a good camping trip, it's also a time of discipline and upgrading. Nothing inspires the mind like distance from "the norm". This is me on a nearly 2 minute dive, at about 12 meters deep, on my way back to the surface. There is much peace to experience in those moments. Ironically, the trick to holding your breath for minutes under pressure is to be absent-minded of the fact that you're under water in the first place. Good business philosophy has a great parallel: Allow yourself the freedom to focus on the value of the service, and the people. Complete the work, smile, breathe, and proceed.
