Check out a new article by NCT’s Dr. Lewis @psychhealthnews (Link in bio) Here, Dr. Lewis highlights the important role psychedelics will play in mainstream healthcare and the need to train physicians to integrate these medicines into their respective practices. It is crucial that Canada does not make the same mistakes it has made with medical cannabis. Psychedelic therapies are already here and poised to make significant leaps this year. Ensuring that medical practitione...rs are properly trained to understand psychedelics and their applications is essential. This will involve doctors young and old learning about a field they may be unfamiliar with - but that is what makes good doctors great: not just their knowledge, but their ability to gain new knowledge and apply it to their practice. #neurology #nct #nctvirtual #NCT #concussion #Concussiontherapy #medicalcannabis #recovery #research #neurologycentretoronto See more

Brain fact! Did you know the human brain is divided into two hemispheres, the left and right. The corpus callosum connects the two hemispheres. Generally, the left brain controls the muscles on the right side of the body, and the right brain controls the left side. One hemisphere may be slightly dominant, as with left- or right-handedness. #brainfact #neurology #neurologycentretoronto #research #nct #nctvirtual #awareness #funfact #medical #virtual

Tics are sudden, involuntary movements that can sometimes include abrupt vocal expressions. Treatment includes pharmacological interventions and behavior therapy. Some patients, unfortunately, continue to have tics despite treatment. This suggests alternative treatments need to be investigated.... Resource Activation (RA) is a program that aims to improve the patient’s perception of their own resources. It emphasizes the abilities and strengths of the patient to enhance their self-efficacy and improve coping with the disorder. A pilot study utilized a 16-week RA program to treat 24 patients diagnosed with either Tourette Syndrome or a chronic tic disorder. It was found that tics were reduced significantly, and tic-related impairments were improved. The patients also had significantly lower ratings on a subjective burden scale. These results are promising and more work needs to be done to determine the efficacy of Resource Activation programs as a viable treatment for tic disorders. We would like to announce to everyone a study pertaining to chronic daily headache (CDH), with is looking to recruit youth advisors ages 13-18. The 12-15 recruits would be asked to contribute a total of 3 hours, taking place as 2 90-minute sessions on December 5th and 12th. The study is being done collaboratively with the University of Manitoba, University of Calgary, and Canadian Childhood Cannabinoid Clinical Trials (C4T). Recruits would be compensated $25/hour for the 3 ho...urs of time spent. The sessions would be completely online, so all that is needed is a computer. Youth advisors will be meeting with the rest of the research team, which includes other researchers, as well as a physician, pharmacist, and psychologist. The goal of this project is to increase the influence and input of children and adolescence into (1) the development of clinical research on cannabis health products for the treatment of chronic daily heaches, and (2) co-design an intervention for migraine in the emergency department, specifically regarding which novel treatment should be evaluated next. This is an incredible opportunity for youth to give their input and have it translated to real-world actions in a meaningful way that could potentially help millions. The sooner concussion treatment starts the faster one recovers. This is a key principle of Active Rehabilitation in concussion care. The days of complete physical and cognitive rest in the treatment of concussion are long gone. Here we share more evidence to support initiation of activity within 24 hours of a diagnosed concussion. But, keep in mind, it’s never too late to start becoming active despite your concussion symptoms!... A study by Kontos et al. (2020) investigated the relationship between the length of time since injury to the beginning of treatment/clinical care. They performed a cross-sectional study of 162 adolescent and young adult athletes and found that those who sought clinical care sooner (within 7 days of injury) were more likely to have shorter recovery times (<30 days) than those who sought care 8-20 days after the concussion. Studies like these show the importance of rapid access to concussion care, which was the main driver for the creation of NCT’s Virtual Rapid Access Concussion Clinic.
