This is the most amazing an inspiring article I have read in decades, truly. No fluff, just truth and incredibly insightful observations. 30 years ago At Home P...rogram was a revolutionary after putting people with disabilities into institutions for decades. We are in desperate need of new At Home Program, because children being cared for by their parents at home are ten fold more complex than 30 years ago. Thanks to modern drugs and interventions our son is still alive, but 30 years ago he would have not lived home, he would been placed in a nursing facility, because of the complex care he requires. Today I’m asked to care for him on my own at home, not even qualifying for nursing support. I’m asked to administer medications that are double locked up in a hospital setting, because wrong dose can kill the patient. I’m asked to replace his g-tube, a procedure even nurses are not trained to do... I so desperately hope our government will rise beyond their status quo and imagine the future. So many children and families could be saved and preserved if they are supported in their caring work. Because paying thousands of dollar to foster families while completely ignoring biological families is not only morally apprehensive, but makes no financial sense either. See more
