In her day, when children had their own time (and many did not), they played with real things in the real world. They were the protagonists in their own story, making sense of their world through their play. 170 years on there are all sorts of ‘entertainment, amusements and distractions’ that take the imagination, creativity and agency (in the real world) from children. The content and the programmes have been designed by others to ’teach’, entertain, amuse, cultivate physiological addiction*, create brand allegiance, cultural allegiance - and make sh** loads of money from the sales of the said toys, devices, ‘games’, apps That’s the scene for our children, but what about us? Many of you reading this page will have watched The Social Dilemma, the documentary from Jeff Orlowski exploring how addiction and privacy breaches are FEATURES, not bugs, of social media platforms.
