Today is Bell Canada's Let's Talk Day. Mental health is a very important topic for those involved in animal welfare. Compassion fatigue and PTSD are particularly prevalent in those directly involved in helping animals like Animal Protection Officers. Yesterday in Moncton court, Kevin and Donalda DONAHUE of Calhoun, NB, pled guilty to charges of failing to provide adequate food and care to their animals and operating a Pet Establishment without a licence. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the NBSPCA in October 2019 following a complaint of animals being kept in unsanitary conditions. Upon investigation multiple animals were seized due to poor condition from malnourishment and being confined in their own filth. ...One young puppy that was seized did not survive. Donalda DONAHUE also admitted to selling her dogs without a Pet Establishment licence. Donalda DONAHUE had previously been convicted of wilfully failing to provide care to her animals following an investigation by the NBSPCA and RCMP in March of 2013. A total of 52 animals were seized from her residence in Calhoun at that time following the execution of an entry warrant. The animals were found to have been left unattended with inadequate food and water and in unsanitary conditions. Having a previous conviction of animal cruelty and neglect certainly impacts the severity of the sentences imposed by Judges for consecutive convictions. Kevin DONAHUE was prohibited from owning animals for 5 years with the exception of 2 dogs he currently owns. Donalda DONAHUE was sentenced to 6 months house arrest and prohibited from owning animals for the remainder of her life, with the exception of 2 dogs currently owned. As their two dogs’ natural lives expire, only 1 pet is allowed. Animal cruelty must be taken seriously and sentenced appropriately to properly deter society from these terrible acts. Please report any animal neglect or cruelty in New Brunswick, or suspected ownership of animals by a person who is prohibited from doing so, to our hotline at 1-877-722-1522. We would like to remind the public once again that it is the courts who determine the sentences, prohibitions, etc. NOT the NBSPCA. See more

Studies show that women often put off leaving an abusive relationship in fear of what will happen to their beloved animals once they are no longer around. Thank...s to Safe For Pets Too: In Transition With You, New Brunswick women will no longer have to worry. Safe For Pets Too launched on February 9, 2011, to provide temporary shelter and veterinary care for pets of women who are leaving an abusive relationship and who have concerns about the safety of their animals. Sheltering is provided through animal hospitals, animal shelters and private homes, giving animals a place to be taken care of for up to 30 days while the owner searches for pet-friendly housing. This service is available for domestic house pets, and some farm animals on a case by case basis. Women can access the program through transition houses, domestic violence outreach offices or the police/RCMP during an emergency. Pets are transported by an NBSPCA officer, and will be examined by a veterinarian before being placed in temporary foster care. While the pet is in the care of their foster families they will be well treated and safe from the possibility of being hurt in an act of revenge. Safe For Pets Too provides abused women in New Brunswick with a critical service, while highlighting the bond between people and their pets and the link between animal abuse and family violence. Development and administration of the program is a cooperative effort of many different individuals and agencies. Committee members represent the New Brunswick SPCA, New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association (NBVMA), police, New Brunswick Chiefs of Police Association, New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, transition houses, outreach offices, Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick, as well as many individuals. For more information on the Safe For Pets Too program, please contact us by email at: [email protected]
