In the early part of the twentieth century, the wide-open space of the west called to many men. But for women, this often meant a life of stark loneliness. Miss...ing the familiar surroundings of hills, streams and lakes in Ontario, and organizations such as the Women’s Institute, these women in the west set to work bringing the WI to their new homes. It was then that the WI became a national organization, The Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada, or FWIC. The first president of the FWIC was a lawyer from Edmonton, Alberta named Emily Murphy. In 1916, she became the first female magistrate, but her first court proceedings as judge was abruptly stopped. In the early 1900s, it was still law that you must be considered a person in order to be a judge, and as a woman, Mrs. Murphy was not considered a person under the law. Emily Murphy began the journey for women to become recognized as persons in Canada. She and four other Albertan women known as the Famous Five, worked tirelessly, and they were eventually successful. The victory was the Persons Case Act of 1929. Special thanks to the 2020 Erland Lee Museum Home Interns, Emily Jackson and Sharifa Riley, for the above post-text. For more on this, and other, amazing WI women through History, check out the intern’s curatorial tour of A Woman’s Work is Never Done: 125 Years of Serving their Communities available on the @erlandleemuseum social media & YouTube pages.
