Central Lake Ontario Conservation issues Water Safety Statement Date/Time: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 - Noon Subject: Notice of Hazardous Creek Conditions Issued to: Emergency services, school boards, local media, local conservation authorities, Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry... The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada is forecasting 5-10 mm of rain this morning, as well as another 5-10 mm of rain expected to fall Thursday night. While this is not a significant amount of rain, unseasonably warm temperatures are expected to continue into the week which will result in increased snowmelt. The forecast rainfall combined with saturated soils, warm temperatures, and associated snowmelt, could result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. No flooding is anticipated but will be monitored. The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents and children to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and ponds. This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Friday March 13, 2020, or until further notice. The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will continue to monitor the conditions of the streams and will provide updates as required. For further information, please contact the following person at 905-579-0411 ext. 134. Alana McDonald Flood Duty Officer Note: A Watershed Conditions Statement Water Safety is a general notice that potential conditions exist that poses a risk to personal safety. High flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors that could be dangerous for residents and recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected. CLOCA’s role during a flooding event is to monitor watershed conditions and weather forecasts, predict watercourse and Lake Ontario conditions, and communicate our findings to the public, municipalities and media. Based on our watershed knowledge, CLOCA also provides technical advice to municipalities in support of their flood response efforts. If you are concerned about high water levels in your area, please contact your municipality. For emergencies requiring police, fire or ambulance, call 911. 24-Hour Flood Line For questions or concerns related to flooding, please call: Office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.): 905-579-0411 ext. 134 After hours: 905-579-0411 ext. 200
