Newcastle Veterinary Clinic 26.12.2020

In the past few weeks we have seen lots of pups coming into the clinic with one or more ticks attached and engorged. Just a reminder that ticks LOVE cool, damp Fall weather and are very active this time of year. If your pet goes outdoors it's a great idea to have them on flea and tick protection right now to help avoid complications like Lyme disease flea infestations!

Over the past several months we have been asked frequently if our phone lines are malfunctioning because people are unable to get through to us right away. The truth of the matter is that our phones are in tip top shape but they are ringing off the hook! . This video does a great job of explaining why the Covid-19 pandemic has had vet clinics all over the world busier than ever. The veterinary world has changed so much in the past 6 months and we will continue to evolve as t...he pandemic runs its course. This means a lot of changes for our staff as well as our clients. . We want to thank all of our valued clients for their continued patience and support as we navigate our way through this together. We hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying any extra time they may have at home with their four legged friends https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCSZ4E_SSfU&feature=youtu.be

Over the past several months we have all experienced an upheaval of our day-to-day routines. Pets have become used to having human contact all day, every day, and with a lot of people now heading back to work pets are having to suddenly face long days alone. This drastic change in routine can lead to separation anxiety. . . Signs of separation anxiety: - Panting, pacing, salivating when owner is preparing to leave home ... - Vocalizing - Destructive behaviour when alone . . Pets at higher risk of separation anxiety: - Senior pets - Newly adopted pets - Pets with existing behavioural issues - Puppies . . What can we do to reduce the likelihood of separation anxiety? - Start slowly changing your daily routine with your pet to mimic what it will be like when you are back to work. For example, if your pet has been enjoying hour long walks every morning while you’ve been home start gradually shortening them to a length that will be attainable when you are back to work. - Start leaving your pet alone at home for short periods of time before you have to go back to work. Gradually increase the length of alone time to prepare them for full days alone when you are back to work. - Provide something positive and stimulating for the pet when you leave the house. Ideally this would be something they only receive when you leave the house. Examples are stuffed, frozen Kong toys or puzzle feeder bowls. Give them something that will take time to finish in order to keep their mind preoccupied while they adjust to being alone. The longer you are away the longer lasting the treat should be. - Try using dog-appeasing pheromones. These come in plug-in diffusers (no scent detectable to humans) or collars for the dogs to wear. . . Taking necessary steps to avoid/treat separation anxiety will make for a happier home for pets and owners alike! . If you have any questions or concerns about your pet and separation anxiety please call us at (995)987-3816 or email us at [email protected]

To our valued customers: We are living through a truly trying time right now with the COVID-19 outbreak. We are doing our best to keep our doors open while still keeping our staff and our community safe. We will be reducing our hours to reduce public contact while still being able to assist patients in need. We will be seeing our EXISTING PATIENTS for EMERGENCIES ONLY on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 5pm. We will also be working hard to refill food and medicati...on prescriptions as best as we can while dealing with delayed deliveries and stock shortages. We also ask the following if you do visit our clinic in the coming days: 1. IF YOU ARE OR HAVE BEEN SICK PLEASE DON'T VISIT THE CLINIC. We are offering our services at a risk to ourselves and we ask that you help lessen the risk of spreading germs by staying home if you are or have been ill recently. We also ask that you please stay home if you have been in contact with someone who is ill. 2. PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE. Please use the hand sanitizer on our front counter as well as our surgical scrub soap in exam rooms and washroom. 3. ONE PERSON IN WAITING ROOM AT A TIME. If you see someone inside already please wait outside or in your car. Feel free to call us from your car and let us know what number to call when we are ready to serve you. 4. ONLY ONE PERSON PER PET. Please do not bring multiple people into the clinic as this just increases the risk of spreading germs. 5. PLAN AHEAD. Due to an overwhelming demand on our suppliers they are unable to ship everything we order as quickly as usual. We are running into shortages so please do not leave calling for food and medications until you are completely out. We may not be able to help you in these instances. 6. PLEASE CALL AHEAD for any refills or potential appointments. We will not be able to refill medications on the spot. From everyone at Newcastle Veterinary Clinic, we appreciate everyone's patience during this stressful time and hope that everyone stays happy and healthy!
