Walbourne Studio 01.07.2021

Rennies Mill Painting - Step 8 I continue to paint in the detail of the rocks along the river banks. I also add layers of detail to the grass areas on the left and right banks. I start to work on details in the Mill itself. Every brush stroke adds depth to the painting.

Rennies Mill Painting - Step 7 I now start to paint in the detail along the rocky banks and the river itself. I begin with a medium to dark grey for the underpainting and then add the highlights and shadows over those background colours. I use a light blue for the river and blend in white to create the brighter areas along the river.

Rennies Mill Painting - Step 6 As I carry on I sketch out the rest of the painting areas with a mid grey colour. I continue with underpainting the south river bank and I start work on the north bank. At this point I just want to get layers of under colour down that suggests depth and gives a foreground to background transition. No real detail work happening yet. Broad strokes with wide brushes. The painting is starting to take shape.

Rennies Mill Painting - Step 5 I move on to painting the Mill itself. I put down the basic undercoat for the Mill and some of the outlying buildings. I also start to paint in the south bank of the river keeping the brush strokes loose and flowing to indicate the shape of the river bank. I keep the Mill colors dark brown and the newer outbuildings the colour of the natural wood. Not much in the way of bright colours used on buildings in those days.

Rennies Mill Painting - Step 4 I now start on the middle ground, painting the area that is now the grounds behind Government House and the Circular Road area. I graduate from a teal paint for the forested sections to bright green for the meadows. The detail is again purposely blurred. When this is dry I start to fill in the houses with a basic first layer of colour. I have in mind the light direction as I paint the houses, keeping lighter shades on the right (sunward) facing sides of each house.
