Our flock of hens just got bigger! A nice mix of brown and white and one pretty little black Orpington. These girls are moving to greener pastures tomorrow, they have done a great job cleaning up our future fruit area. Hopefully they are all laying soon! #happychickenshappyeggs #grimsbyfarm #grimsbyonthelake

Our egg chickens are so happy in their new location! A simple and effective step in sustainable farming is letting the animals do the work! We wanted to plant fruit trees and bushes beside our house but it is full of perennial weeds. So we put the chickens there. They will scratch at and eat all the weeds and leave the whole area nicely fertilized with their manure. Swipe to see their progress in just two days! And not only are they doing the weeding, they are getting lots to eat, cutting down on feed costs and making their eggs extra nutritious! When they are done here we will move them to the next area we need. And as a side note, we have 30 more chickens coming next Monday, so we will have a more regular supply of eggs. I know a lot of you can’t wait! #sustainablefarming #niagaraonthelake #pasturedeggs

Herbal infusions. The reason I got into soap making was to get into the world of medicinal herbs. So many plants/weeds are beneficial for our skin! Pictured here are dandelion infused lard, plantain infused coconut oil, and a chickweed and purple dead nettle infused olive oil. Swipe for the calendula seedling! We have planted so many more, including echinacea, lemon balm, chamomile, anise hyssop, bee balm, and elderberry. #medicinalherbs #naturalskincare #grimsbyontario #grimsbyonthelake

Garlic Mustard pesto: garlic mustard is a tasty invasive species, and we have lots! They are high in vitamin A and vitamin C as well as trace minerals, chlorophyll and enzymes. For this pesto I used: 3 cups garlic mustard leaves 1/4 cup toasted sunflower seeds Juice of half a lemon Salt to taste ... 1/2 tsp each ginger and red pepper flakes Olive oil (enough to get desired consistency) Place in food processor and pulse until desired consistency, scraping sides down as you go. Sooo good used in pasta! #eattheweeds #supportlocalfarms #grimsbyontario #grimsbyonthelake See more
