Please pray for our students on retreat this weekend, where we will launch the Newman Fellows Program 2020-2021. The theme for the year is "Faith in Times of Crisis". The aim of the program is to bring together the pillars of our mission at Newman: the spiritual, social and intellectual life of students - the images on the poster correspond to these pillars.

CODE RED CARE KIT! "My aim was to offer a small, but heartwarming surprise to our students that would offer a bit of hope during this 28-day shut down. I wanted the students to know the staff are still thinking about them and working to support them while we are out of the office. The boxes included masks, some comforting treats of candy and tea, items to help students maintain some sort of spiritual practice (rosary, candle, bits of scripture and prayers), as well as a few personal wellness items, such as a small journal/pen and scripture colouring pages for creative, silent reflection." -Maya Venters, Manager of Student Affairs

The Director of the Newman Centre, Dr. Pablo Irizar, will be teaching a VIRTUAL/ONLINE course for St. Mark's College at the University of British Columbia, on the question of Truth, starting on Saturday, September the 12th @ 12h00 (Montreal time). You may audit the course. Contact him for more information: [email protected] Course description: Pontius Pilate confronts Christ with the question, "What is truth?" (Jn 18.37). Christ had previously answered the question wh...en he said, "I am the way, the truth and the life" (Jn 14.6). What does it mean to say Christ is the truth, or better, Truth? This course addresses this question according to three axes of analysis: (1) Systematic/philosophical: The course is an invitation "to do truth" and to explore what Truth "makes of us" (as Augustine writes in Confessiones 9.4.8). Thus, the course will look at how the truth of Christ, developed within Catholic Theology, and rooted in the philosophical tradition, unifies and transfigures the fragmented and finite reality of the human condition. (2) Historical/hermaneutic: We will articulate the philosophical problem of truth as it emerges in antiquity, its reception and transformation in early Christianity, and the state of the question of Truth in our "post-truth" world. (3) Textual/theological: We shall situate our discussion within the heritage of Catholic tradition, and will read excerpts from texts by the Apostle Paul, Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Theresa of Lisieux, John Henry Newman, Mother Teresa, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. Accordingly, the learning outcomes are: (1) to think philosophically about theological questions, (2) to gain an appreciation for the historical grounding and development of theological ideas and (3) to engage with primary sources. Prior philosophical/theological training is not required.

Wanna learn about Catholicism? Join CATH 200 (Intro to Catholicism). Instructor: Matthew Nini, TA: Adam Smith. This course seeks to present the Roman Catholic tradition under three valences: first, historically, considering the life of Jesus of Nazareth as foundational, and tracing the development of the Church both according to apostolic succession and to various forms of Christian life; second, theologically, exploring the key doctrines of the Catholic Church and seeking to... understand them according to the threefold hermeneutic of Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium; and lastly, exploring Catholic life and practice as it evolves in liturgical and world-historical time. Critical to this threefold initiation is the consideration of Catholic influence on western culture: students will therefore be initiated into the type of theological reflection that grounds this worldview, and the works of art that express it. Looking for an interesting course? Check out RELG 399: Christian Spirituality with professor Fiasse. https://www.mcgill.ca/philosophy/gaelle-fiasse Course summary: ... For this course, we will specifically focus on the interpretations of the Beatitudes (Mt 5 1:12), and the Song of Songs by some Christian authors. We will therefore pay attention to the quest for happiness and mystic union with God in specific texts in the Franciscan tradition (Clare of Assisi,Francis of Assisi), and in the Carmelite tradition (Thérèse of Avila, John of the Cross, Thérèse of Lisieux, Elizabeth of the Trinity). We will also analyze the understanding of Beatitudes in Augustine and Aquinas, and then analyze the views of contemporary authors who linked the Beatitudes and union with God to specific actions. First, Christian de Chergé and Pierre Claverie in their dialogues with Muslims during the difficult years of Algeria. Second, Martin Luther King and non-violent action. For the latter, we will also pay a close attention to the discussions about the contrast (common points and differences) between Martin Luther King and current social upheaval.

The Newman Centre of McGill University warmly welcomes Ms. Maya Venters as incoming Manager of Student Affairs ([email protected]). As we launch our Catholic Leadership Program at the Newman Centre in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, Ms. Venters will focus her efforts on: (1) reaching out to students primarily at McGill University, (2) managing the Catholic Leadership Program, (3) supporting the programming, and planning of other activities at the Centre. Ms. ...Venters completed her BA in English Literature and Rhetoric from St. Jeromes University and the University of Waterloo. There, she pursued her interests in poetry, writing, theology, and poetics. She studied Art History at Trinity College Dublin, completing her dissertation on the Chi-Rho page in the Book of Kells. Last year I was VP SNS and what great year of delicious food we were able to have together as a family! This year Ill be the NCSSs VP Outreach. As a Montrealer, I have been able to work and build solid connections with Concordias Catholic Student Association, with CCO, the local Jesuits young adult team, the young adults of the local Latin rite, of the Melkite rite and the Maronite rite as well. I pray that I will be able to use these connections to help bring the NCSS to the larger Montreal young adult catholic community and also with other religious communities and clubs across McGill! Ariel Pan - President Hi! Im Ariel (like the mermaid), and I will be serving as President of the NCSS for the 2020-2021 academic year. I am in my fourth year at McGill with a major in Music and minors in Music Education and Management. When not running around campus, I can be found experimenting with gastronomy in my matchbox-sized kitchen, doing art projects on a whim, being a curious person about anything and everything, reading, writing, or directing the Newman Choir. As President, I hope to foster a community where the love of God is present in our passion for service, connection with each other, and resilience as we venture into this coming year. The NCSS has been a place of love and acceptance throughout my time at McGill, and I look forward to serving everyone in this wonderful community!

Belle Pan - VP Communications Hi, My name is Belle, and I am your VP Communications for the Newman Catholic Students Society this year! I will be a student in U2 studying Computer Science. If not hunched over my computer trying to finish all the assignments I don't fully understand, you can find me practising the violin, enjoying a pint of ice cream, or bugging my sister with mass amounts of memes. As VP Communications, my job is to keep the Newman community informed about a...ll of the activities and events the NCSS is holding over the next two semesters. I plan on achieving this by sending weekly newsletters, updating the Facebook page, and giving weekly announcements at Mass. If you would like to subscribe to our email list or learn more about our events, please do not hesitate to email me or message the Newman Catholic Students Society on Facebook! See more

Sebastián Méndez - VP Finance Im Sebastian Mendez and Im the new VP Finance. I study political science and have been a part of the Newman community since Easter 2019. I feel truly blessed to have been welcomed into the community, particularly this year as an exec for the NCSS. Its an exciting chance for me to increase my involvement and give back to the community. Hopefully serving as VP finance will help me grow in my spiritual and communal life at Newman. The upcoming se...mester will no doubt be different from years past, but its as important as ever for us to remain connected! On a more personal note, Im originally from Mexico, but Ive grown up in Montreal. I love sports, whether its playing soccer or fantasy football or watching the boring stuff like golf. I also play a lot of board games! I hope my fellow Newmanites are keeping safe and in touch with the community, wherever they may be studying from to start the fall. It will be an exciting year for me, albeit a unique one. Cant wait to see and interact with all of you again See more
