Your horse understands you better than most, and you never even had to say a word.

Sometimes you just need to stop what you are doing and hug your horse.

Every entry starts with a score of 70. Points for each maneuver are added or subtracted by 1/2, 1, or 1-1/2 points for each of the 7 to 8 maneuvers in the designated pattern as follows: -1 for an extremely poor execution. -1 for very poor.... for poor. 0 for correct with no degree of difficulty. +1/2 for good execution. +1 for very good. + 1 for excellent. Each part of the pattern is judged on precision, smoothness, finesse and the degree of difficulty for each maneuver. Penalties may be assessed for specific infractions. Penalties range from a half-point (1/2) to five (5) points for each infraction. Going off pattern or using illegal equipment will result in a zero score.

We have a lot of young horses on our show team this year and they all performed in the show pen like they've been doing it all their lives. A big shout out to Preston Cromwell for a fantastic ride on SS Gotta Fancy Gun owned by Stetson Stables in the 2 year old pleasure class on Sunday morning.

The Sliding Stop! A proper sliding stop requires a horse to keep its head down, back rounded, hindquarters well underneath the body, and to "walk" with the front legs as the hind legs slide. This maneuver isn't something that is taught overnight. Proper conditioning, basic training and mental maturity all come into play when teaching your horse the mechanics of the sliding stop.

Perfect Circles! The horse must perform large, fast circles at a near-gallop and smaller, slow circles at a lope. They should be perfectly round, with the rider dictating the pace of the horse. There should be an easily seen change of speed as the rider transitions from the large, fast to the small, slow circles. Your horse should be willingly guided with symmetrical circles going both directions.

We are finally home after a great... but cold three days at Fletcher's Horse World for the Ontario Reining Horse Association Spring Thaw! The results this weekend were outstanding with improvements from everyone on Team Newnham. On Friday night Lynea Guthrie and Tinseltowns Prize hit the pen to start our weekend. Lynea and Preston scored a 67.5 and brought home their first cheque as a team! ... Josi Stratford and her mare ML Dun With Guns had great runs in the Green Reiner classes on Saturday and Sunday finishing the weekend with a second and a third! Jonathan also stepped into the show pen with Josi's mare for the Intermediate Open finishing second with a score of 70! Alyssa VanKleek was again aboard SSSNOWGOTTAPRETTYGUN. Aspen and Alyssa came home with a few great placings in the Green Reiner classes and won the Green Horse class on Sunday. Jonathan Newnham piloted Tinseltowns Prize in the Open and stepped out of the pen with a score of 75 to tie with Loris Epis to WIN the Open! Congratulations to all our riders and their horses.
