Nearly a year after the first reported case of COVID-19, pharmaceutical giants announced a vaccine was on the way. Pfizer and Moderna both say their research is promising and Canada has inked deals with both to secure millions of doses. In total, Canada has procured more than 358 million does from seven companies, according to CBC . While some countries have announced plans to begin vaccinating their residents as early as December 2020, some Canadians will have to wait a bit longer.

Short-lived affordability gains in Canada’s housing market receded in the third quarter of the year, owing to voracious demand for detached housing and nascent signs of income precarity. A report from RBC Economics noted that market activity during Q2 was quelled by the coronavirus, unintentionally boosting affordability. However, those gains were all but lost in the June quarter.

Economic fundamentals don’t explain the country’s escalating housing prices and that’s indicative of vulnerability, says the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Strong demand for real estate in Greater Victoria over the past year means property owners on the Island are likely to see increases of as much as 10 per cent in their annual property assessments, which should start hitting Island mailboxes this week. Assessment, which has mailed out more than 378,000 Island assessments and more than 2.1 million provincewide, homeowners in the capital region can expect their 2021 assessment to reflect a real estate market left relatively untouched by the pandemic.

Victoria’s housing market is stable now, but the region could soon be dealing with price acceleration and overheating, according to a study released Wednesday by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The third quarter housing-market assessment labelled Victoria as moderately vulnerable, the same label it got in the second quarter of the year, as there was little evidence of price acceleration, overheating or overbuilding, although there was some evidence of overvaluation.
