I am so passionate about raising awareness about agoraphobia because it's one of those things that a) doesn't get talked about a whole lot and b) there's a huge... misconception that agoraphobia = being unable to leave your house without screaming in terror. Full stop. In reality, agoraphobia means that you have a panic/fear/anxiety response when using public transportation, being in open spaces, being in enclosed spaces (like a shop or restaurant), standing in line, being in a crowd, or being outside of your home alone. And that fear/panic/anxiety response doesn't have to be a panic attack. More often than not it's a pounding heart, sweating, shaking, nausea or abdominal distress, detaching from reality, or hot flashes. People with agoraphobia can often have an outside job because after a while they develop comfort there. Same thing with a grocery store they visit frequently or a restaurant they really like. (And some people with agoraphobia can't). As a teen, I used to have stomach issues whenever I'd go anywhere that wasn't home and eventually, I just chalked it up to being an overall anxious person. Which is partially true, agoraphobia does fall under the anxiety disorder umbrella, like generalized anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. Like all mental illnesses, agoraphobia is multilayered and presents differently for many people and it's best to talk to your doctor about it. #GAD #anxietydisorders #agoraphobia

Effective today, new public health measures are in place for the cities of Edmonton and Calgary to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. A new mandatory 15-pe...rson limit on all social gatherings is being implemented in Edmonton and Calgary. This applies to all social or family gatherings, including parties, wedding and funeral receptions and banquets. This limit does not change the measures currently in place for restaurants, worship services, wedding ceremonies, conferences, funeral services or trade shows. Along with the mandatory limit on social gatherings, voluntary public health measures currently in place in Edmonton are also recommended for anyone living in or visiting Calgary. Wear non-medical masks in all indoor work settings, except when alone in workspaces such as offices or cubicles. where you can be safely distanced from others or an appropriate barrier is in place Limit of no more than three cohorts: (a core/household cohort, a school cohort, and one additional sport, social or other cohort). Young children who attend child care may part of four cohorts, given that child care cohorts have not been seen to be a high risk context for spread. Learn more: Alberta.ca/COVID19

Below is the email ADWA has finally received from the Honourable Jason Copping. I would be very curious to find out more about the proposal they sent to the Go...vernment of Canada. Well I guess that means another letter. Dear Mrs. Pilipchuk: Thank you for your September 3, 2020 email regarding the inclusion of frontline workers in the disability support sector in the wage top up for essential workers in Alberta. As Minister of Labour and Immigration, I appreciate the opportunity to respond and apologize for the delay. The Government of Alberta recognizes the challenges workers across different sectors are facing and appreciates the valuable work and dedication of essential workers that are supporting Albertans through this pandemic. Our government has provided a proposal to the Government of Canada for the temporary wage top up for essential workers. Alberta’s approach carefully considers the existing economic situation and the needs of essential workers in our province during these unprecedented times. Please be assured we will share this information with Albertans when we receive a decision from the federal government. I appreciate your offer of assistance in planning for the wage top-up; however, as Alberta’s proposal has been submitted to the federal government, we do not expect to require further input. This is an unprecedented time for all of us and I appreciate how challenging the impact of this situation has been on the disability support sector. Thank you for taking the time to write. Sincerely, Honourable Jason Copping Minister of Labour and Immigration cc: Honourable Rajan Sawhney Minister of Community and Social Services
