This is our last project for this year. We created goodybags for Christmas for seniors and homeless. Due to the pandemic this year, Christmas will be looking qu...ite different from the previous years. Families won't be able to come together and celebrate a joyful holiday. Therefore we decided to create and distribute goodybags to uplift and create joy in their day and spread some smiles! I hope everyone has a spectacular 2021 and a Happy New Year! See more

Blanca Salvatierra and Jenna Otto-Wray, the two staff members behind the NSG Metro Vancouver Network, and New Westminster NSG team are honoured to be carrying out this great work with all of you This year has been a challenging one for all in our communities, and we're so grateful that the Neighbourhood Small Grants family gracefully pivoted and delivered this program across Metro Vancouver. We were in awe of the over 900 projects across Metro Vancouver, the stories of new Pr...oject Leaders, and the return of seasoned community volunteers and staff. The work you did in 2020 shone some brightness in what could be a dark-time. We wish you and yours a Happy Holiday Season and look forward to making more connections in 2021! NSG Metro Vancouver Network will be hosting a New Year's (Virtual) Open House! It will be an interactive and fun morning of celebration and connection, and we hope you'll join us! This is the first post of our new NSG project sharing series! One of our goals of the NSG Network page is to share all of your beautiful stories and photos from... the work in your neighbourhoods and communities. First up is Silmara Emde's Porch Portraits! Silmara applied for an R-NSG grant at the beginning of social isolation, in her neighbourhood of Kitsilano, Vancouver. Her project, Porch Portraits, invited folks to have their photos taken in front of the home they were isolating in, with the people and animals they were living with. "In facing the COVID-19 epidemic, we've proven that we can do whatever it takes to keep ourselves, our neighbours and our city safe even if that means locking ourselves down. But we weren't hiding. My camera was still able to find you on your balconies, on your front steps and in your yards. #HeroHats With a dedicated team of seamstresses and a designer, New Westminster residents were able to produce over 100 HeroHats to distribute to the Royal Columbian Hospital Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit for frontline workers. These hats are worn to help provide relief to the ears of workers with buttons for facemask placement and a resting place for protective eyewear. A small HeroHats logo placed on each hat behind the left ear will remain a symbol of the love and gratitude we have for our frontline workers, and those helping to fight during the pandemic. #newwest #VFNSG #NSGNETWORK #FSGV

Meet Yunuen Perez Vertti and Grant Withers, founders of Living Room Art The Heights in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood and recent recipients of a Responsive N...eighbourhood Small Grant. This initiative was launched back in 2014 to transform residential spaces into alternative art spaces, connecting diverse populations who may not ordinarily go to galleries and museums. Their work created opportunities for local artists to display their art and connect in an intimate way with their neighbours. To adjust to the current situation, Yunuen and Grant launched a virtual edition of Living Room Art, The Heights. They used the grant to pivot and create an experience of connectedness through an online, virtual space. The event was a huge success, with more than 100 people in attendance digitally, and Yuneun and Grant recorded some reflections with us to share how they used the power of art as a tool for community building and fostering connections.

Leslie shared a photo of her foraged pieces she'll be using today in Shauna Kaendo's art-making workshop: "Our NSG Summit was opened yesterday with the beautiful words of an elder. She spoke about how we have bought into the myth that we are separate from the land and how that disconnect allows us to do things we wouldn't do if we acknowledged and believed that everything is interconnected. My homework last night was to gather some foraged pieces. Yesterday we heard from a new Project Leader, K.J. Clare from Chilliwack. Her beautiful project, Do Good Recklessly, delivers flowers to seniors across her comm...unity. K.J.'s goal is to have 1000+ bouquets sent by the end of July. There were many voices asking about K.J.'s project, wondering where she got all her beautiful flowers and how she originally promoted the project. K.J. shared: "I get my flowers from The Green House in Rosedale. She's a lovely florist, and she gives me an amazing deal because of the nature of my project. As far as my first bouquet recipients, I posted on my facebook feed asking my friends if any of them or their family members needed some cheering up. :) I had around 20 responses, and 27 bouquets, so I gave the last 7 out randomly as I was doing deliveries." - K.J.
