Born and raised in Toronto, Giancarlo Murano participated in school plays and opera musicals, from an early age. He soon developed a passion for the stage. However, on entering university at age 17, he focused on education, and graduated with an Honours Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, a Bachelor in Education, and a Minor in Kinesiology. He then ventured to Los Angeles when he was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. On his return to Toronto, Giancarlo worked on feature films, television shows, and commercials.
