Get enough sleep and eat healthy. Sounds simple enough but when we have a lot on the go these two things tend to get pushed to the backburner. You stay up late to get paperwork done, knowing that you need to be up early, then hit the drive-thru because you don’t have time to make breakfast or lunch. In it he shared that before taking on a new client he asks them to rate their financial involvement. I’d love to ask you the same. How would you rate yourself in regards to your finances? Level 5. As a small business owner it can often feel like you’re all alone. You’re not. Years ago I read an article on the people you should have on your speed dial. I’ve tweaked it over the years but no matter what stage of business you are in, it’s always important to have these 6 people in your phone favourites: Spouse - Whether or not your spouse works with you in the business, they are impacted by it. Keeping them in the know is important both personally and professionally.... Banker - Having a great relationship with your banker is important because at some point, you’ll need money from them. At that point, it will be much easier if they already know who you are and the type of business you’re in. Accountant - Your accountant isn’t just there at year-end to do your taxes. A good account will help you understand the full financial picture for your company and your family. They will help you with tax savings and long-term planning, as well as making sure your business is profitable now and sustainable for the future. Coach/Mentor - Having a sounding board when you want input or advice on company decisions is priceless. It means having accountability to stay on track with your goals and support in getting the entire team rowing in the same direction. Lawyer - Though you may feel like you can’t afford one, having a lawyer at your fingertips will give you peace of mind when you need legal advice. Insurance Broker - Your insurance broker should know your business. You should be speaking with them throughout the year as your insurance needs may change with your business, with the seasons, with growth. Be sure you’re staying in touch with your broker, not just contacting them at renewal time. Although growth is not a new idea, there are things that can help you stay in the improvement mindset. This is where The 10 Commandments for Continuous Improvement come in. In September we held our I.C.E. event at Manulift in Stoney Creek. At that event, Pierre-Marc Laforest spoke to contractors about his transition from rock salt to 100% liquid brine. This inspired many contractors to invest in liquid brine application equipment from Pierre-Marc (who sells VSI sprayers). If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over? (John Wooden) We hear from contractors all the time that they’re too busy to implement new systems and processes within their business. But it’s those same systems and processes that will save time, money and headaches down the road. This spring, I advised a contractor to implement a specific process. Earned Revenue vs. Other Income - do you know the difference and why it matters? If not, you’re in good company! In order to make sound financial decisions based on accurate information, it’s important that your monthly Profit and Loss Statement accurately reflects your operational income and expenses. If you have received government funding this year due to COVID, those funds should not be recorded as earned revenue. If you’ve sold an asset and received money for it, those f...unds should not be recorded as earned revenue. Because you didn’t earn it through the operation. It’s important to make this distinction because including other income in your unearned revenue account makes your operation look more profitable than it is. When you begin to create your budget for next year, if other income is not separated from earned revenue, you will likely create unrealistic sales targets. It’s important to ensure that your financial statements reflect the actual business operation.
