The Good Food Box Society of the North Okanagan needs volunteers once a month (on the Tuesday before the 3rd Thursday of each month) to help set up these boxes ...and totes to hold the monthly vegetable orders provided to our community members. It is a big job. It involves going up and down stairs, but many hands make light and quick work! Visit our web page at www.goodfoodbox.net Contact us at [email protected]

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the economy. People have been laid off, and many companies have had to reassess if, when, and how they hire. This has put job seekers in a unique position. Two of our recent HireAbilty clients worked at their last jobs for almost 35 years and were laid off due to industry downturn and business closure. Through our program we were able to get them hired in positions in industries that received a boost due to COVID-19! ... Even with the government taking steps to reopen the economy in provinces across Canada, the process of looking for a job has changed. Below is a list of actionable tips you can use to boost your job search during and after COVID-19: 1. Accept that things have changed You need to accept that what may have worked for you in the past may no longer be relevant in today’s job market. 2. Keep looking The COVID-19 situation is very fluid. Things could change tomorrow or it could take months. 3. Be patient 4. Expand the types of jobs you’re interested in Consider casting a wider net. Be open to different roles that you are well suited to 5. Consider temporary roles If you’re not able to find full-time permanent work in your field, consider a temporary job while you continue your job search. It’s a great way to make connections and keep a stream of income flowing. 6. Be ready for video interviews 7. Update your skills The skills and traits companies are looking for are changing. One thing that COVID-19 has highlighted is the need for people with technology skills. Highlight these skills and traits on your resume and job application. 8. Follow up Looking for a job always has its challenges. COVID-19 has made it even more challenging. Staying consistent, leveraging your network, and adapting to the changing work world is the key to make yourself the right candidate for the job. Last year, thanks to your kind donations we were able to provide Christmas gifts to over 100 low income seniors living in our community! If you would like to help in making spirits bright for low-income seniors this Christmas season, please purchase a gift card of any amount from a local store that can provide the basic necessities (food, toiletries, clothing) and bring this to our office along with a cheerful card. Feel free to make it into a hamper with additional items... that you feel a senior would like such as slippers, socks, cookies, chocolate, tea, etc... The gift cards that will be of most use to seniors in need include the Wholesale Club, Safeway, and Walmart. Please also enclose the activation receipt, if you have it. The more gift cards we receive, the more seniors we can include! Please drop off your donation by December 15 so we have time to get it to a senior in need. Thank you! www.NexusBC.ca #christmas #giving #senior

Why Winter Carnival? You may be asking yourself why is Winter Carnival going ahead in 2021? As it turns out, this is exactly the kind of year Winter Carnival w...as made for. This community festival was created because the Vernon Community needed something to look forward to. The major highways weren’t built in the late 1950’s, so very few people could travel. Businesses needed a boost to help them get through the long winter months. And the residents of Vernon needed something to get them outside, to combat the depression so many of us feel in the winter time. Any of this sound familiar? Our goal this year is simple.Give people something to look forward to, in the safest way possible. See more

Thank you Volunteers Thank you so much to all our new volunteers and those who have been supporting us for years, for giving your time to NexusBC Community Resource Centre! We truly appreciate your commitment to the seniors in our community while we continue to navigate our way through this pandemic. We are so appreciative of all the generous offers of support to help our community! More than 50 new volunteers have signed up since March and that is amazing! We’ve been fo...cused on matching volunteers with seniors to help with simple day-to-day tasks, such as grocery shopping, housekeeping or transportation to medical appointments, so that they continue to feel cared for and connected with their community. If you’ve reached out to us and haven’t heard back, please know we will contact you as the need arises. Seniors who live independently in their own homes, with no help from family and friends, are facing a deepened sense of isolation and loneliness during this difficult time. With help from volunteers like you, NexusBC Community Resource Centre is making a real difference in the lives of local seniors. We thank you sincerely for your continued support and for bringing a little light into the lives of those who need it most. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you. NexusBC is very grateful for all our donors: each individual, business, foundation and government agency that supports us in whatever way possible. During this unprecedented time, your contributions have helped us connect volunteers with isolating seniors, allowed us to organize grocery shopping and delivery to seniors homes and provided safe transportation to and from medical appointments. Even though finding a job has become more challenging than ever, with your support, we...’ve continued to be able help clients stay motivated on their journey to employment. Finally despite hardships faced during the pandemic we have risen to the challenge, and with your assistance have started the new CONNECT pilot program, that will offer community navigation services to individuals going through life challenges in Vernon. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of many. Thank you for caring. Thank you for giving See more
