The coronavirus scare has seen quite a number of people resorting to panic buying/hoarding, which the Germans use a rather nice and descriptive word to describe.... Panic buying is "hamsterkauf", and the verb "hamstern". Because hamsters store as much food as they can in their cheeks. A business owner in Rengsdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, has a solution to all those who load up their shopping carts with a five year supply of toilet paper. In his REWE Market anyone who buys more than one pack pays a premium...an extra Euro 5, from three packs it is an additional Euro 10. And the money collected goes to Corona-Hilfe...an organization that helps those badly affected by the virus.

German Ambassador to Canada, Sabine Sparwasser, has ordered our flags to be flown at half-mast to honour the victims of the tragic shooting in Nova Scotia. Tog...ether with Canadians, we are stunned and shocked by the brutal rampage in #NovaScotia. We all feel even more deeply with the families of the victims of this senseless killing because today we all worry about our loved ones safety all the time. Trotz Corona-Pandemie, on Friday Chancellor Merkel went shopping in her local supermarket as usual. Picking up cherries, shower gel, a small pack of toilet pape...r and four bottles of wine (Ricossa from the Piedmont in northwest Italy). And it isn't a PR exercise. Angela Merkel lives modestly in an apartment across the street from Berlin’s Pergamon Museum. Just her husband’s name, Prof. Dr. Sauer, is above the buzzer, and although people know where both the apartment and store are they don't bother her. Photo credit: Bild.de
