There are many different types of hardwood and softwoods that can be refinished, some of those include; oak, cherry, ash, maple, birch, pine, fir, cedar, and spruce. Hardwood is the most common product used in homes, but cottage homes and older homes may have a softer wood in them which takes more time and uses more stain and conditioner, so tends to cost a bit more to be refinished. When getting your floors refinished you will notice they first sand down the entire floor to... strip the old finish and stain, then the edges and corners will need to be sanded so it all blends evenly. After the sanding process the dust will be all removed and cleaned and then the floor will be stained, left to dry overnight and then the finish will be put on. When choosing your stain you must remember it will react differently to each species of wood, that's why our colour experts are able to give you the colour of your dreams by using their knowledge and experience to customize colours for you! We only use oil-based stains, unless you specify otherwise, because the water-based stains don't dry evenly or give as rich of a colour as oil-based. You will then choose your finish of either matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss. You have your choice between oil and water based finished. And remember, we can always add shine after the first coat, but cannot remove shine, so start with something a little more matte if you're unsure, and work your way to something shinier, in the semi-gloss or gloss family. Most contractors will give you 2 coats of finish and leave it at that, but here at Niagara's Quality Flooring Co. we like to leave our customers worry-free and satisfied by applying 3 coats of water-based finish that will add that extra protection and reassurance of no dents or scratches.

Every wood is different but on average, 3/4 inch wood can be sanded about 6 to 8 times within the floors lifetime. Which means you should be getting your floors refinished about every 7 to 10 years.
