This is a bit of History regarding my Grandfather Jack serving, and the story when he was a Prisoner of War in Germany. Happy Remembrance Day On Veteran's Day, honoring my Grandpa Jack Story as told by Ken Wake (Jacks Nephew) - in World War II, when Uncle Jack was on a POW transport train, being taken into Germany, the train had to stop because of an air raid and all of the POW's were taken off the train and assembled along the side of the train. The guard that was watc...hing over the group Jack was in dropped his rifle in front of Jack. Uncle Jack bent over, picked up the rifle and politely handed it back to the guard. When Jack arrived at the POW camp he was taken to the office of the Commandant . The Commandant asked Jack to sit and he poured him some brandy and refilled his glass on several occasions. They talked about where Jack was from, and what he was doing in the Canadian army. Jack was part of a tank crew that I believe was taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge. The Commandant asked him several times about the new British radio that was part of these tanks. Jack would answer that he didn't know anything about it. Finally the Commandant put away the bottle of brandy and said he had other duties and was releasing Jack back to the barracks. Then he asked again about the British radio and Jack answered that he was sorry but he knew nothing about it. The Commandant then reached into one of his desk drawers and pulled out a manual which he tossed towards Jack. "Here," he said. "Why don't you read about it and next time we talk you tell me all about it." Jack was very young looking and blonde. He reminded one of the POW guards of this son, so Uncle Jack got special treatment while interned during the war. #remembranceday #november11 #familyhistory #grandpajack #canadianhistory #canadianveterans
