The teen years can feel daunting for both parent and teen there are so many changes, do you remember what it was like? There is a natural distancing from adul...ts that is both welcome and difficult. In one breath the teen acts like a child and longs to be cared for by a parent, only in the next moment to crave their independence and freedom. The dilemma for the teen is they are neither child nor adult they are in the ‘in between place’. They are somewhere on the bridge crossing the divide between childhood into adulthood. I feel for them, I remember being there, it often felt agonizing. The anthem for teenage years should be Everybody’s changing and I don’t feel the same (compliments of the band Keane), but of course the irony is that it is actually the teen that is changing the most of all. The key thing is not to retire too early and make ourselves redundant- they aren’t ready to go it alone. At the same time we will need to give some autonomy and room for trial and error. There face many emotions that flood and overwhelm them, increased expectations to chart their future, and issues with their own peer relationships. They still need us, and here are a few of the ways we can support them if development seems to be on track. If a teen seems stuck or there are increased challenges with a relationship, then the Neufeld Institute course on Making Sense of Adolescence might help. To feel felt requires that we attune to each other’s primary emotions. When the primary emotions of two minds are connected, a state of alignment is created in which the two individuals experience a sense of joining. The music of our mind, our primary emotions, becomes intimately influenced by the mind of the other person as we connect with their primary emotional states. Parenting from the Inside Out, Daniel J. No one likes to see their kid cry. And, sometimes we don’t think they SHOULD be crying in this situation (Seriously? You’re THIS sad about the page ripping in h...alf?! YOU ripped it!). So we try our best by saying You’re okay! in an upbeat way. But... have you ever been super upset about something, only to hear someone say Hey, don’t cry, it’s not that big of a deal. Yup. THAT. How much better would it be if that person said, Hey, that was really upsetting. Sorry that happened . Well, THAT, but for our kids! The message we accidentally send to our kids when we say Hey you’re okay, don’t cry is Hey, your feelings don’t matter. So, next time your kid is having an epic meltdown, try this: I hear that you’re sad. It’s okay to feel sad. And, after you’ve given them permission to feel, empower them to cope and soothe. You can try: Offering a hug Asking what would help their sadness Sharing what helps when you feel sad Grabbing a glass of wine while trying the above 3 suggestions... no seriously. Let them feel those crazy feelings! Show them they can be honest with you! It will help them recover more quickly (short-term goal) and build some LIFELONG emotional skills and self-worth (long-term goal!) On October 15, at 7:00 pm in all time zones, families will light candles in memory all of the precious babies who have been lost during pregnancy or in infancy. Too many families grieve in silence, sometimes never coming to terms with their loss. Tomorrow Thursday October 15th, I ask you to light a candle. Thank you @butterfly run Vancouver for this info graphic.

Intrusive thoughts are so common, almost every human has them at some point in their life. Yet, we still don't talk about it! Often times we don't notice our i...ntrusive thoughts until we become parents and those thoughts start to be about our babies or ourselves, and seem so out of character for what we think a 'good parent' would think. Here are 5 things that can mare intrusive thoughts worse, and right at the top? Staying silent! If you have been experiencing intrusive thoughts, please reach out for support. You are not alone, and there are things you can do that help! Sometimes, just reaching out and saying outloud the thoughts you are having helps turn down the intensity. Sometimes, medications are needed. And there are a ton of strategies in between, too. And you deserve the support! You really do. -Heather Posted @withregram @kateborsato Almost ALL moms experience intrusive thoughts (those terrible scary pictures that flash into your mind), but UGH they can be terrible to deal with! Just because something is common, doesn't mean we have to just accept it. Especially not when there's a lot that you can learn so that these thoughts don't have so much power. You can find freedom from them, and oh my gosh I want that for you! So I'm leading a free training on Tuesday August 11th where I'm getting to the core of these scary thoughts - you'll learn exactly what they are, what they MEAN, and why they're bothering you, plus we'll talk about what you can do right away to start feeling better. Let's do this together, okay? You deserve support. xox #maternalmentalhealth #postpartumjourney #postpartumsupport #postpartumdepression #postpartumanxiety #thisispostpartum #4thtrimester #fourthtrimester #takebackpostpartum #motherhoodjourney #momtruth #momtruths #momstruggles #momlifeishard #motherhoodishard #scarymommy #survivingmotherhood #momsunite #motherhoodunited #momsupport #unitedmotherhood #momthoughts #momcommunity #honestmommin #motherhoodcommunity #honestmomconfessions #honestlymothering #honestmom #momssupportingmoms #speakthesecret
