People are so creative! ~ How to Be Seen and Heard when Asking for Support It’s not always obvious or easy Tips for when you are challenged with this: ... 1 Acknowledge what you’re feeling. What emotions are present? 2 Get clear on knowing what you want. See Supportive Questions below 3- Know how to ask for what you want. Be Assertive; share the information that is going to make the difference. Examples: I need to vent. Can you hear me out? I am feeling irritable / worried / stressed out I need a hug. I’m feeling sad. May I have a hug? I had a long day. I am tired and hungry. I need a meal and a good night’s rest. Would you mind taking care of dinner tonight so I can relax this evening? You might not get what you want right away. You might not get the respect you deserve. That is okay. Keep knowing what you want and asking those who will support you. Practice a Natural Attitude of Gratitude along the way Tips for when you are seeing or hearing someone else: 1 Engage your listening muscles. Listen to the words they use. 2 Ask questions based on what they are saying. What’s happening? What does that mean to you? See more questions below. 3 Assure them you are here for them. Supportively hold them accountable to take action. SUPPORTIVE QUESTIONS For Knowing What You Want: - What is getting your Attention? - What is your Intention? - What is important to you? - What matters? - What else? - What do you believe about this? - What is real and true?
