Alberta’s NDP Opposition will demand answers from Jason Kenney and the UCP on their pandemic spending choices during today’s supplementary supply budget debate.

Alberta physicians and nurses haven’t just been faced with defending Albertans against COVID-19 also having to defend themselves against their own provincial government. At a time when all efforts must be on defeating COVID-19, the Alberta government’s efforts have undermined health care workers.

Jason Kenney’s belief that the economy and public health are at odds with one another is out of step with the approach taken by other leaders. Unrestricted growth in cases will undermine the economy. It’s up to this Government to take appropriate steps to support the economy while introducing measures to slow the spread of this virus.

This member statement is one of the most personal I have made in the Legislature. In normal times, raising a family is not easy. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the responsibility of that role in ways we could have never imagined. I feel the weight of that change, as many Albertans can relate, as a mother living in an intergenerational home with my son and my mother.
