How often I come across this exact challenge in my practice where people spend so much of their time and energy trying not to feel what they feel. The myth is that the more you push negative feelings away the more "mature" you are as you don't let things affect you. Whilst there is a place for choosing your battles, often half the battle is won when you just allow yourself to feel what you feel. At the same time, parents seem to believe that its detrimental for their kids to ...feel and express sadness, upset, frustration which usually results in multiple attempts to distract them, a lecture about why they don't need to feel that way or rebounding frustration that their kids are upset.
