Update on Provincials - we expect to hear tomorrow on the plan for Provincial Festival 2020. In the meantime, take a moment to sit and appreciate the beauty of music!

Decision on PABC 2020: 2020 Festival Cancelled It is with profound regret that the Board of Performing Arts BC has decided to cancel the 2020 BC Provincial Festival due to the ongoing uncertainty around the COVID-19 outbreak. In light of quickly changing government and health agency directives, and the cancellation of numerous local festivals, it would not be prudent for us to push ahead with a 2020 event. The health and well being of our participants and their families, adju...dicators, volunteers and members of the public are too important to jeopardize. As a number of our member festivals were able to have a festival event this year, and some may still have one, we will honour those youth chosen as full competitors for the 2020 Festival, by allowing them to compete in the 2021 provincial festival based on their 2020 adjudicator recommendation. These competitors will have to compete at the appropriate age level which might be different for some in 2021. We would ask that they perform the one piece/dance on which they were nominated by the adjudicator; second and/or third works may be their own choice and may be at a higher level. We do however encourage all young performing arts competitors to compete in a 2021 local festival. Local festivals may still qualify their usual compliment of provincial festival competitors in 2021. We just might have a bigger provincial festival than usual next year! Looking forward to seeing you all at the 2021 provincial festival! Stay healthy and safe!

First of all, congratulations to all the dancers who performed so spectacularly in the Ballet and Modern section of NIFPA. We are thrilled with your joyful attitudes and the excellence you have displayed on the stage. One issue we are noticing is the increased phone usage taking place backstage. While we encourage dancers to take photos of each other, we are going to be limiting phone usage as we feel strongly that the use of social media apps i.e. Tik Tok, Snap Chat etc, sh...ould not be consuming their preparation time when focus should be on the upcoming performance and socializing with peers. Therefore, we will be banning phones (for students) from coming upstairs into the hall and backstage area. Please share this with your dancer. We thank you for your understanding. We want dancers to continue to excel and be focused on their performances and most of all have good old fashioned fun! One other reminder for parents - it is incredibly busy downstairs with so many dancers getting reading and warming up with their teachers. For dancers ages 10 and over we ask that you say your good byes at the double doors leading into the green room and arrange for them to meet you upstairs when they are done. For the little ones 10 and under you can escort them in and then once they are ready and their teacher has them gathered you can head upstairs into the theatre and meet them downstairs at the end of the session after adjudication. For anyone parking at the Sid or surrounding areas during NIFPA. As long as the parking spot is a "legitimate" spot the 2 hour limit can be ignored. If by chance you are issued a ticket, the city has agreed to waive for our patrons.

2020 Festival Begins tomorrow - Saturday, Feb 22nd. One item forgotten on our handy "How to Survive Festival" document. There is a filtered water refill station in the lobby at the Sid. Please remember your reusable water containers as long as they have a secure lid they can come into the theatre.

Thank you to those who are already trained - please sign up for your preferred shifts ASAP! It is soooo much easier for planning if the shifts are covered in advance. If you are having troubles navigating the system, please email me. For those that want to help and haven't been to training your LAST CHANCE for NIFPA 2020 is this Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 6:30pm. Beverly and Jocelyn will be there to answer any questions you might have. Please feel free to drag along ...your friends and family - everyone can come! You don't need to sign up for the training, last minute attendees are welcome. If you know a teenager (16+) that needs volunteer hours this is a lovely and easy way to fulfill this grad requirement. Hope you all are doing well - as per yesterday's email and FB post, registration is now open. We just wanted to make you aware that for the first time we will be in a situation where time could be limited. So scheduling could be tight. For that reason - we encourage you all to submit your registrations as soon as possible. Registrations are not complete until payment is received and we don't have access to your numbers until this happens. We will be holding firm to our d...eadline in order to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. Also, we need a list of students needing to take workshops for provincial qualification emailed to me prior to registration deadline. Please email me your contenders sorted by age and which disciplines they are competing in. Once schedule is set we will open the workshops to everyone. Deadline for submissions is NOVEMBER 15, 2019 After many requests for help running a full festival, our board decided at the AGM we will only be hosting Dance for our 2020 Festival. This decision was not made lightly and everything is in place if volunteers come on board to run the 2021 Full Festival. In the meantime Mid Island Performing Arts Festival (previously known as Upper Island in Nanaimo) has adjusted their rules to allow participants from our boundaries to compete in their festival a full participants. Our AGM will be held on Wednesday September 18th at 7:00 pm at 2130 cliff avenue. As most of you may be aware this festival is run solely on volunteers. We hope to see some new faces out so we can continue to offer this great learning experience.
