I think parents often wonder why I work so much with the hands when the child is having difficulties with eating. In case you were wondering too, I can explain! Think of yourself in a desert with nothing to eat. You come across three different things that look possibly edible. What do you do? You pick it up with your hands and feel it. Maybe one has small spikes in it. That would not feel good in the mouth. The next is very sticky. Again, that could be difficult to ea...t. The last is smooth. You open it and explore more with your hands before deciding to smell and lick and eventually, you take a bite. This is the same for kids with eating challenges. So I work on helping their hands be comfortable with a variety of textures and in the process, their mouths get more comfortable too! It’s amazing to see the progress just from playing with play doh, shaving cream, whipping cream, apple sauce or pudding. Once the hands are ready to accept new textures, the mouth follows. Now you know!

It’s been a year since Nightingale OT was born! I’ve learned a tonne and am looking forward to continuing on this journey!
