Vulnerable people on the street need our help now more than ever, as they face poverty, the COVID-19 pandemic, an affordable housing shortage, and the overdose crisis. With your help, NightShift can continue to reach out with hope, a hot meal and outreach services throughout this difficult time in history, and beyond. When you watch the video below , you will hear some of our friends on the street tell us, in their own words, what NightShift means to them. You will hear hear...tfelt comments like: They provide meals and help me with my loneliness. I don’t know what I’d do if I was homeless without NightShift. They provide me with food, clothing and moral support. The way I look at NightShift, they are my best friends. NightShift got me through the hardest part of my life. NightShift’s goal is to fundraise $200,000 during November’s The Show Must Go On campaign (in lieu of our annual in-person fundraising Gala). With your help, we can raise the funds necessary to continue reaching out to people in need on the streets. Because of pandemic restrictions, NightShift is forgoing our in-person Gala fundraising event this year. Instead, we are offering you the opportunity to participate in a different kind of fundraising initiative, The Show Must Go On, an online campaign during the month of November. Poverty, the COVID-19 pandemic and the overdose crisis all mean people on the street need our help and hope more than ever. ... Your generosity helps ensure NightShift’s outreach care and services continues for these vulnerable friends, who are battling homelessness, poverty, addiction and mental illness. Find out five great ways to help here: https://nightshiftministries.org/gala/ And check out this video messsge from NightShift Founder and President MaryAnne Connor: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=XgGVmCBDahw

Huge thanks to Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Services Fund and Surrey Cares Community Foundation for a $55,000 grant for our Mobile Outreach Unit (MOU)! Christina Buttkus of Surrey Cares and Surrey Councillor Linda Annis stopped by to present the cheque to NightShift Founder and President MaryAnne Connor, and our MOU Manager Brianna Kowalski. NightShift is thrilled to soon launch our MOU, which will provide basic nursing care and crisis counselling, along w...ith clothing, blankets and hygiene items to our friends struggling with homelessness, addiction and mental illness. It’s the generosity of individuals, and this grant from #ECSFund that made our MOU possible. Feeling the gratitude this Thanksgiving. #lovehopepurpose #mobileoutreachunit #carebus #outreach #surreyoutreach #surreycares

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. In July 2020, there were 175 overdose deaths in BC, an average of almost 6 people per day. At NightShift, we are all too familiar with the indiscriminate tragedy of overdose. That’s why all our staff and many of our volunteers are trained to administer Naloxone, a drug that blocks opiate receptors in the nervous system and most often revives a person experiencing an overdose. Just last week, a staff member administered Naloxone ...to a friend outside our building who had overdosed. She stayed with the man until paramedics arrived to give further care. He is an important part of our community in Whalley, and his bright and friendly face often greets us outside as we arrive to work at NightShift. We are so glad he is still with us, and we are here for him to provide care and referrals when he is ready to start his recovery journey. In the last few years, we have lost many friends to overdose in the NightShift neighbourhood. Friends like Denis, who had been joining us for our outreach meal and volunteering to help set up and clean up since our earliest days as a ministry. Denis loved to smile, to serve alongside our volunteers, and to share love and hope (especially with students visiting NightShift). Denis passed away over a year ago in his tiny apartment, alone, not wanting people to know he was still struggling with addiction. We miss him dearly. Do you have a story about overdose you want to share? Do you have a story about surviving overdose and starting the recovery journey? Please feel free to share your grief or your encouragement in the comments below or email [email protected] Let’s end the shame and stigma surrounding addiction and help stop the plague of overdose. Let’s share love, hope and purpose, and help bear each other’s burdens along the way. #lovehopepurpose #outreach #internationaloverdoseawarenessday #endthestigma #sonsanddaughters #findingfreedom #recoveryisreal

A socially-distanced hug at NightShift! On either side of the photo are NightShift’s dear friends George and Wes, who faithfully clean our outreach lot after almost every meal. We are so grateful for these amazing guys who love and serve their community. In the centre is Ric, one of our Thursday night volunteer leaders, who often shares that NightShift ministers to his own heart as much as it does to the hearts of the friends we serve. ... By the way, it’s Ric’s birthday today! He would never make a big fuss about that ... but we will! NightShift loves serving in Langley, and we are honoured to have the privilege of sharing an additional hot meal Tuesday nights at a new temporary housing site. It’s good to be part of the Langley community of service providers, who have pulled together to serve folks struggling with homelessness, poverty, addictions and mental illness. Together these groups provide emergency shelter, nutritious meals, access to health care and harm reduction, and of course, hope. ... #outreach #langleyoutreach #lovehopepurpose #feedinghungryhearts Lookout Housing & Health Society Langley Vineyard Kimz Angels Taste of Heaven

HOPE, HEALING AND FREEDOM are not cancelled! There is a very special recovery program, Re:act Centre Surrey that has been running in NighShift’s Education Room for more than a year. RE:ACT it is a community of people sharing and seeking recovery education from addictions and complex trauma. Lives are being transformed. Lives like Cheyenne’s. Cheyenne had been in and out of rehab for addiction since 2008. A few times, she found herself homeless . After experiencing a violent ...attack in March this year, Cheyenne was grasping for hope and healing, and she knew she wanted to live. She enrolled in the RE:ACT program. I’ve done so many rehab programs, I could have run my own group, but I still couldn’t get clean, Cheyenne shares. But RE:ACT is different. You go deeper. Cheyenne said she has found a safe place and a support network at RE:ACT, to work through the shame of addiction and trauma. I’ve learned so much here, Cheyenne says. This is about going deep. We are taught about shame, grief, anger and loss. And there is a huge support network. With the help of others in the program, and the support of one-on-one time with her coach Wendy, Cheyenne is finding freedom, and reaching forward into a healthy future with herself and her family. At RE:ACT, I can be totally transparent, Cheyenne shares. Like with (my coach) Wendy, she said. I can share anything with her and I’m not judged. RE:ACT has helped my whole family heal. It’s great ... Rehab is about fixing your drug use, but at RE:ACT it’s about inner healing. I could not have found that healing without God and RE:ACT. My whole family is doing better. We’re healing. To learn more about RE:ACT, to register or to donate to this wonderful program, click http://reactcentresurrey.ca Leave an encouraging word for Cheyenne here!

A hot, healthy meal is essential to keep up good health, especially for our friends on the street who face food scarcity everyday. We are so thankful for our volunteer kitchen teams, like this faithful group from Surrey Alliance Church and for generous donations to our kitchen, like the few hundred pounds of top grade meat (wow!) from our friend Sid at Ocean Trailer . Thank you! On the menu Monday night was hearty beef vegetable soup. It’s because of kind community givin...g that NightShift can feed a hot meal, 365 nights a year to people in need on Surrey, and two nights a week in Langley. Together we are changing lives through hot meals and compassionate connections with people struggling with homelessness, poverty, addictions and mental illness. #hotmeals #outreach #surreyoutreach #langleyoutreach #lovehopepurpose #lifechanging #feedinghungryhearts

Talk about driving a good cause forward! Today, May 26, would have been NightShift’s 13th Annual Charity Golf Classic (our biggest fundraiser of the year), before global pandemic safety forced us to postpone due to large gatherings being prohibited. But that didn’t stop a small group of some our big-hearted donors from getting together on the links to honour and raise some much needed funds and encouragement for the street level outreach work of NightShift Street Ministries!... Here are two of these great guys, Stephan Luking of Gramercy Homes and Brad Hughes of Park Ridge Homes. These wonderful home builders have been essential to laying a strong foundation for NightShift to reach out to vulnerable people, 365 nights a year, with a hot meal, love, hope and purpose. Thank you to all who participated and surprised and encouraged us in this way today! We needed it and so did our friends on the street. NightShift’s outreach to people struggling with homelessness, poverty, addictions and mental illness operates without government funding and relies on the generous giving of individual and corporate friends.
