Among the many remarkable subjects that the 92-year-old New York photographer and filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg has shot- who include Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Catherine Deneuve- is the Cuban Communist revolutionary Fidel Castro. The 32-year-old leader had just seized power in February 1959 as Cuba’s prime minister in the name of the publicized guerrilla war against Batista’s forces. It has been the running theme of Schatzberg’s life to suddenly find himself photographing the most extraordinary historical events. For the first time, the story of his few days with Castro is being through works in display at Rukaj Gallery.
