The NLC Students’ Association (NLCSA) nomination period has (once again) been extended to the end of this Friday, October 9th for the positions of Vice-President and Secretary with the DC Student Council. Campaigning (for the NLCSA) will take place from 9 AM on October 12th to 9 AM on October 15th. The NLC Students’ Association Elections have been moved to Friday, October 16th from 9 AM 4 PM.... What the NLC Students’ Association (NLCSA) does for you! The NLCSA provides the following services to students: Administers funding to local student councils through the NLC Students’ Association Fees collected at time of registration. Student Society Emergency Assistance Funding- $4,000 last year (government matching grant $4,000) = $8,000 in total! Administered through the NLC Foundation. NLC Student Association and Council Award: Six (6) Awards of $200 ($1,200 in total). Administered through the NLC Foundation. Support other provincial Student Councils campaigns if they feel it is warranted. They have the ability to make changes they feel are necessary for the overall betterment of the student body. These initiatives are then brought to the Education Council or the Board of Governors for review and possible adoption. Let's #GetReal and break the stigma around mental illness. Here's the truth: 1 in 5 Canadians will struggle with mental illness at some point this year alone.* No one is truly alone in their struggle and yet we tend to think we are. And so, we isolate ourselves and keep our feelings to ourselves. Speaking from experience, it's much harder to establish good mental health if we can't even be honest about how we're doing. Connection to community is important too. Knowing th...at you are valued, respected and heard is important. Too often we suffer in silence instead of gathering together. So, here's your challenge for today, tomorrow, and beyond: When someone asks, "How are you?", do them (and you) a favour by telling the truth. Honesty has the capacity to create connections, solidarity, empathy, compassion, kindness, respect. Honest conversations are the cornerstones on which the foundational elements of mental health can be built. Being honest and vulnerable is one of the bravest things you can do. *Canadian Mental Health Association
