Hi everyone, due to current events we will not be placing any of our stands at local retailers such as Lester's Farm Market or Good2GrowNL this year. However you can order through our website, message us here or call/text 682-4556. We're hard at work on the farm and will be officially open for the 2020 season as of May 20th. Please note that our farm is currently closed to the public.

Who doesn’t love a blue spruce? These striking conifers vary from green-blue to almost silver in color and have a way of grabbing your attention. They're also naturally green, their blue hue is due to a wax coating on the needles that reflect certain waves of light, the thicker the wax the more blue the tree appears. So when greening occurs, understandably, some people become confused or even upset. Why is my blue spruce turning green? Is it dying? Is it really a blue spruc...e? Greening is the phenomenon of a blue spruce turning green. This doesn’t mean it isn’t a blue spruce, or that’s it dying or sick, in fact there are various reasons it could be changing in color. The blue coloring is only present on new growth, so over time it will likely green a bit anyways but there are other circumstances that may be causing the change as well. Things such as pesticides and air pollution can strip the needles of their wax causing them to lose their color, poor growing conditions (ex. lack of nutrients in the soil or not enough sunlight) will prevent new growth and harsher than normal weather conditions can also erode the wax. Once the wax is gone it will not come back thus greening occurs until the new growth in the spring. There are things you can to do try to delay the process from happening however, such as giving them proper growing conditions (spruce like good drainage and full sun). Covering young trees in the winter months and while the tree is establishing it is important to provide sufficient water without over watering as this can cause root rot, just enough to keep the soil moist. Fertilizing the tree in the spring and then again in mid-late summer can also be helpful.
