The girl on the left lives in my basement. The boy on the right was adopted by another lady. My tax client - coworker - friend - animal care hero and I caught them together about 5 years ago from her apartment complex grounds. Babies. Wild. Unwanted. Uncared for. Just a couple of the estimated 100,000 homeless cats in our city.... Borrowed the traps from a registered non profit. Got the kittys spayed and neutered, ear tipped and microchipped from a City of Toronto feral cat clinic. Ended up able to move them into homes because they're not so feral after all. They didn't become coyote food. They didn't have to battle each other to stay alive outdoors. They didn't have to raise babies just to watch half of them die. They didn't. It's now spring 2021 - it begins again. When you pay your property taxes, you help Toronto Animal Services fulfill this good work. When you donate to registered charities, lives are changed. Tax dollars matter. Tax dollars save lives. God loves you. Jesus loves you. Do you love you? It's Holy week, so things are a little quieter here at NNR. Appointments are on hold as we take time to celebrate our faith, God's loving redemptive plan for His people and the fulfillment of it all through Jesus' life, death and resurrection.... Yesterday I was able to participate in a virtual Passover meal with coworkers. We experienced a pinch of the great history and significance of what it means, knowing Christ acts as our sacrificial lamb and atones for our sins. I believe how we treat ourselves and each other is a direct reflection of the love and value we place on each other. At NNR, we believe people are created in the image of God. We believe animals are also God's creatures. We believe each individual is loved by God and therefore is to be respected and cared for by us. We hope that attitude is reflected in our work! When you have an appointment with us, we do hope you feel respected, valued and that our work is done in love. When my client exclaimed 'taxes are gross' they were frustrated at the complex jargon and terminology that came with some of the rules. Can they claim a deduction or not? Can they carry forward this item or not? Why are their refunds so unpredictable? They just wanted clarity.... Instead, they got gross tax jargon and complex paperwork. I'm not here to dispute income taxation or it's many rules. As long as I've remembered, I've been compliant. Content. Obedient. It's my personality, so it makes sense that my job is to help people follow rules. That also includes understanding why they're in place at all. Winding down the weekend with a shredding party. As a tax preparer, I need to keep certain paperwork for CRA just like my clients. The T183 is a form that clients sign which grant me permission to click that submit button and transmit their returns over to CRA. I keep 6 years worth of forms in binders in case CRA asks me to send them any for verification.... When I first started, they asked me for about 50 forms each year, 2 years in a row. I sent them everything they wanted. They've never asked again. Still, I keep my records because that's part of the job. A decade ago after daddy passed, when I first filed taxes for this client, I 100% royally immensely messed it up with the single click of a computer mouse. She was well within her rights to be angry, take legal action, leave a terrible review and never step foot into NNR Tax again. Instead, she said to me what my old boss said after I nearly bounced the company payroll ... - Did I mean to do that? - Do I know what went wrong? - Can it be fixed? - Will it happen again? Transactions are basically imperfect people serving other imperfect people. When those people stay in relationship over the years, genuine connections develop outside of the exchange of goods or services for cash. So, when things do go wrong, it can be addressed in light of an entire established history of other things going right. I'm glad my papa established these relationships before me.
