In 2008, Canadian artists Tony Roman and Tyler Brett (T&T) created ‘Everything’s Gonna Be OK’, their first full-scale creation of this imaginative and unconventional version of sustainable design (pictured at TIAF ‘08). T&T practices a wide range of experimental art activities that connect architecture, art history, sculpture, graphic design, and music into a cohesive vision of an optimistic future. They combine humour, irony, and fantasy with serious technological and envi...ronmental concerns to offer a picture of a post-apocalyptic future constructed from familiar elements of the recent past. Their ‘Carchitecture’ series of drawings and maquettes imagines a post-oil world where cars are best used as building blocks for a new society. In 2007, No.9’s very first public project used the platform of the Toronto International Art Fair to present a new commissioned environment by @castordesign (formerly ‘Castor Canadensis’), and a far-ranging, international film program on themes of ecology, land use, and the utopian impulse. The Canadian design firm is known for their iconoclastic approach to furniture and lighting. For this project, their custom shipping container housed the film program, and a com...fortable lounge and reading area that was fashioned from jeans, magazines, cardboard sheeting, stuffed animals and other pre-owned materials. Providing a focus for the space was a campfire-like nest of recycled fluorescent lights, inviting contemplation, and conversation. Swipe through for more images of Castor Design’s No.9 project. In Spring/Summer 2013, in partnership with @evergreen_brick_works, we invited Scottish artist @_nathan_coley_ whose installation, ‘We Must Cultivate Our Garden’, continues to resonate with what we do today at No.9. ‘We Must Cultivate Our Garden’ is a phrase taken from the last line of Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ (1759), which calls for action and participation rather than passive acceptance. It indicates that happiness is cultivated through an active lifestyle that fosters personal... growth. Coley’s installation, placed atop the Evergreen Brick Works building a hub for green innovation and sustainable solutions asks audiences to reflect upon personal responsibility, self-sufficiency, and how the individual can get involved and take action to help in creating change in a positive way. In this context, Coley’s work acts as a catalyst for thinking about our individual responsibility to our environment, neighborhoods, and cities. Did you know we have a 40-acre hands-on teaching facility just north of Kingston? @No.9gardens is Canada’s First Cultural Centre for Sustainability and Reconciliation a place for you to think and learn about sustainable living. In 2020... We donated 800lbs of fresh produce to Community Harvest Kingston, Food Bank, and Tyendinega. We hope to double this in 2021. We had 31 Queen’s University volunteers for 6 Volunteer Events.... Our volunteers learned to plant 50lbs of Garlic, and closed the garden beds by weeding, and mulching with locally donated hay and leaves from the property. Our volunteers enjoyed forest walks and music as well as attended an outdoor and distanced Volunteer Appreciation Day, where they enjoyed a fire, plant identification walks, and playing music with wooden instruments. Swipe through for images of No.9 Gardens in full swing. We look forward to continuing our work and expanding our projects with you in 2021! Happy new year! #sustainableliving #ecoeducation #no9 #ecofriendlyliving #growyourownfood #environmentallyconscious #sustainability #localfood #organicfarming

We are pleased to announce that No.9 received a grant from the Digital Strategy Fund from Canada Council for the Arts for our award-winning education program, Imagining My Sustainable Community. The program offers Grade 7 and 8 students online workshops to brainstorm and collaborate to create art around the theme of environmental issues. Art and design are the central pillars of the search for innovative ways and concrete steps to stabilize the Earth’s climate. No.9 is counti...ng on the cross-pollinating effects of this initiative to create a huge network of information and education about climate change. To reach youth, No.9 has developed digital tools that enable participants from Halifax to Vancouver, including First Nations people, to discuss the sustainable development challenges their communities are facing. These new online spaces and communication tools also foster understanding and reconciliation between peoples. We sincerely thank all of our educators and volunteers during this particularly challenging year.
