After today seeing so many sore backs please use these tips for the next round of snow! Stand with stability: Stand with your feet at hip-width apart to maintain your balance. It’s also best to wear boots that are non-slip when you shovel. This will help protect you from sliding when shovelling. Keep the weight close to your body: Hold the shovel close to your body to guard against straining or pulling a muscle. ... When the snow is deep, try to shovel smaller amounts (35 centimetres/12 inches) of snow at a time. Grip strategically: Space your hands apart on the handle to increase your leverage when lifting the snow. Lift with your legs: Bend from your knees, not your back, when lifting. Not only does it protect your back, but you can strengthen your legs as well! Engage your core: Tighten your stomach muscles when lifting snow. This helps to protect your back as you lift. Don’t twist: Avoid twisting your body when you lift. Move your feet instead to turn your body. This one has a lot of people coming to see us the next day! Don’t fling the snow: Make sure to walk to place the snow on the side of the path rather than throwing it. Turn your feet in the direction you’re dumping the snowthis better positions you to maintain good form. Your whole body will thank you. Snow shovelling can be a very strenuous activity, and even more so without the correct, protective form. With the proper preparation, tools, and technique you can make shovelling safer for you, and your walkways safer for your family, friends, and neighbours. #noadchiropracticclinic #sttont #stthomasproud Happy shovelling!

Ankle sprain aka twisted ankle An ankle sprain is an injury to the tough bands of tissue (aka ligaments) that surround and connect the bones of the leg to the foot . Patients typically present with symptoms such as ankle pain, swelling, history of fall/trauma, and walking with a limp after injury. An ankle sprain often occurs when the foot suddenly twists or rolls, forcing the ankle joint out of its normal position. It commonly occurs with activities suc...h as: running and cutting movements on high grip surfaces (such as in sports like soccer , basketball and football ) jumping and landing having poor balance or joint position sense There are 2 main types of ankle sprains: : when the ankle is forced OUTWARD and the ligament on the INSIDE of the ankle is stretched or torn (affects the deltoid ligament) : more commonly, when the ankle is forced INWARD and the ligaments on the OUTSIDE of the ankle are stretched or torn (affects the anterior talofibular ligament) Common treatment for ankle sprains include: RICE (rest, ice , compression, elevation) Rehabilitation exercise to maintain strength and mobility within the ankle joint ~ Supportive therapy like a brace, kin taping or laser therapy! #noadchiropracticclinic #stthomasproud #adjustment #anklesprain DISCLAIMER these posts are for educational purposes only. Dr. Zimmer answers some of the common acupuncture questions he is asked: Does it hurt? Patients are surprised by how pain-free and relaxing acupuncture actually is. Most individuals do not even feel the needles when inserted. At its worst, it may feel like a minor prick. How many needles are inserted? Expect anywhere from a few, to 20+ needles depending upon your condition, and the intended clinical outcome. ... How long are the needles left in? 10-20 minutes Is it like getting a flu shot?! Nope. Acupuncture needles are a fraction of the thickness of the typical needle we think of when getting an injection - hence why it is much less painful. How will I feel after acupuncture? Patients may report decreased pain and stiffness, and increased range of motion. Many will also feel relaxed, de-stressed, and sleepy! It’s not uncommon to have a great, deep sleep that night! ... Pictured is an example of a patient of mine who sustained a knee injury. Needles were inserted locally at the area of her complaint, as well as in other surrounding areas determined to be related. This patient is back up and running! #acupuncture #chiropractor #noadchiropractic
