The Zamò family started in the 1970s with the production of wines in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area, a very renowned appellation in the northeastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. They own 50 hectares of vines that are located between Italy and Slovenia - one of the premium regions in Italy for white wine production. The 2019 Sauvignon is a wonderful wine. The grapes are destemmed and then macerated for one night in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine remains on the lees for 8 months. Aroma of spicy notes ranging from nettle leaves to gooseberry and grapefruit. Fresh and mineral on the palate, with a long-lasting soft and velvety finish. Scored 91 points by James Suckling. Each summer since 2001, The WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada had been taking the pulse of Canada’s wine quality by assembling over 20 judges from several provinces to taste almost 2000 wines. In 2020 they couldn’t safely do that. Instead, they asked Canada’s wineries to pre-select what they deemed to be their best wines for tasting by five Ontario WineAlign judges and critics. They received 850 wines in 15 categories, and tasted them physically distanced over a fi...ve-week period. The results are published as a Guide to Canada’s Best Wines, with every wine fully reviewed. WineAlign’s #Gamay Category Overview by David Lawrason: Given that we asked Canadian wineries to put forward their best wines for the Guide to Canada’s Best Wines, not many included gamay, which is a statement on the industry perspective on this grape. As I sorted through the winners, even if tightly focused on Malivoire on the Beamsville Bench, who have made a virtue of gamay in Ontario, I noticed a significant trend. The top half dozen wines are all single vineyard renditions, made in a traditional style, a comment that deserves elaboration. Gamay is the grape of #Beaujolais, most well-known for easy going, fruity almost tannin-lite reds meant to be consumed when they are young. A fermentation process called carbonic maceration amplifies the fruity, soft, gulpable ambiance. However, in the Beaujolais region there are almost a dozen village or ‘cru’ appellation wines fermented traditionally to bring out more of the terroir driven influences. They are more complex, a bit more expensive, yet still great value, and way more interesting. He served in the first and second battali...on of The Royal Canadian Regiment as a member of Recce Platoon, was a master marksman and successfully completed para training. In 1998, he served a six month NATO mission in Bosnia under SFOR. In 2000, Andrew was selected to be a part of the 50 man guard who were dispatched over to France to bring Canada's Unknown Soldier to their final resting place in Ottawa. In 2001, he retired from the Military and now resides in Alberta with his wife and two grown children.
