A rare Fancy Pink diamond weighing 5.03 carats will take top billing at the Bonhams London Fine Jewelry sale on September 26. It is an unquestionable beauty----square cut, VS1 and "pure" meaning it is of even pink saturation, with no secondary component colors. If you're interested, it is estimated at 600,000-800,000. Footnote for any science/geology geeks: good coloured diamonds are rare and occur only one in 10,000 gem quality diamonds. A small percentage are pink and many of those are very small. Unlike all other colored diamonds, their pink color is caused not by trace elements in their chemical composition but by a lucky miracle of nature, a distortion within their atomic lattice caused by the pressure exerted on them during their formation.
