The ground beneath our feet! Isostatic Rebound or Glacial Rebound is a fascinating natural phenomenon by which earth compressed by Kilometre thick glacial masses eventually decompress and rise upwards. Imagine pressing a sponge down then releasing it - but in geologic time. In Canada many people mistake the decrease in lake water levels as an indication of them drying up, when often it is simply the land expanding upward around the lake due to Glacial Rebound. We dig further into this on both our Wonders of the Canadian West Program as well as our Central Canadian program called, The Heart of Canada. https://www.ontariobeneathourfeet.com/rising-land-isostati/
Tis the season! Can't wait to dig into some educational programming this summer!

Finding a shorter more navigable trading route between Europe and Asia fuelled much of the early exploration of Canada. From Captain Cook to Frobisher, The Hudson's Bay Company to the infamous Franklin expedition The Northwest Passage has long been the goal. This week a Finland icebreaker set an early sailing record and safely navigated these warmed Canadian arctic waters. For better or worse these expeditions mark important milestones in exploration and transport. http://nypost.com//ship-sets-record-for-earliest-crossing/

We usually see a handful of bears throughout the summer. Always a hit with the students (and Leaders!). Do you think we are doing enough to protect these magnificent animals? http://news.nationalgeographic.com//yellowstone-grizzly-b/

Our students get up close and personal with obsidian during the Stone Tool Technology lecture by Anthropologist James Baker. The students learn to pressure flake the obsidian to make their own arrowheads. So much fun. Check out this cool article on the incredible sharpness of obsidian. http://www.cnn.com//04/02/health/surgery-scalpels-obsidian/
