The Okinawa karate world broke into two in 1981 over participation in the National Sports Festival. Within the Zen Okinawa Karatedo Renmei, which was establishe...d by Nagamine Shoshin in 1967, there where two groups of stakeholders, one of Nagamine Shoshin et al, the other of Yagi Meitoku et al. Nagamine was for participation, Yagi Meitoku - chairman of the association at the time - strongly oppsed it. So Nagamine had to start a new association. A few weeks later the Okinawa Sports Association forcedly ousted the Zen Okinawa Karatedo Renmei under chairman Yagi Meitoku and Nagamine's new group was affiliated. 6 Years later, Sakamoto Tsuguo won the National Sports Festival held in Okinawa in 1987, and Okinawans began to win other important championships in all of Japan. If it wasn't for Nagamine, no Okinawan would have participated! Now look at today. Sakumoto Sensei is not only a leader in karate but also the director of the Okinawa Sports Association. Okinawans were winning for years, and while a lot of kata were just taken and modified in mainland, Okinawans were able to maintain the honor as the "birthplace of karate." After establishment of the new association - with Miyahira Katsuya (Shidokan) as vice president and Miyazato Eiichi (Jundokan) as board chairman, Nagamine attended the meeting of the board of directors of the Zen Okinawa Karateo Renmei under chaiman Yagi back in 1981. He explained it by saying "You have to enter the tiger's den if you want to catch the cubs." And you know what: The final of Karate at Tokyo Olympics will take place exactly 40 years after Nagamine established the new association, on August 7. And we hope Okinawans win!
